Safeguarding Children Online in Vietnam

My children were being loud in the restaurant.

My daughter, seven years old, pushed my son, six years old. My son pushed back harder.

We were on the brink of a complete meltdown.

The other diners looked up from their bowls, judging my family.

I knew what would work. I pulled out the phone. I opened YouTube Kids. The kids went quiet.

Crisis averted.

Sound familiar?

In Vietnam, we parents choose this peace a hundred times a day. None of us know what it costs.

And Vietnamese children, like those worldwide, are growing up in a digital landscape full of both opportunities and dangers.

And while the internet provides educational tools and entertainment, its also exposing children to serious cyber risks, including online exploitation, cyberbullying, and privacy breaches.

With 87% of Vietnamese children accessing the internet daily - and the vast majority accessing it through smartphones , it is important that families and schools take these threats seriously.

The Growing Need for Online Safety in Vietnam

Vietnam has taken significant steps to protect children online, recognizing the urgent need to regulate digital spaces.

The Code of Conduct for Protecting Children in the Online Environment, introduced by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), establishes guidelines for safe digital interaction.

This code targets five groups: parents and teachers, general internet users, media organizations, platform operators, and children themselves.

The goal of this code is to create a safer, more responsible digital environment by encouraging positive online behavior, strengthening privacy protections, and increasing reporting of harmful content.

But unsurprisingly, enforcement remains a challenge.

Awareness is low, and more effective messaging is required to reach families, schools, and technology providers in a way that makes an impact.

Understanding Digital Footprints

Every online action leaves a trace. A comment, a shared image, or a social media post contributes to a child’s digital reputation, potentially affecting future education and job opportunities.

Yet, many Vietnamese children and caregivers underestimate online risks. Only 33% of children ranked talking to online strangers as “very risky” , compared to 52% of caregivers.

Parents and teachers must educate children on responsible sharing and the concept of a “digital tattoo” — the idea that what is posted online can be permanent. Teaching children to pause and think before posting can help them protect their privacy and future.

The Reality of Cyberbullying and Online Exploitation

Cyberbullying is a growing concern, with 14% of internet-using children in Vietnam reporting exposure to sexual content intentionally, and 23% encountering it accidentally.

Meanwhile, 1% of internet users aged 12-17 in Vietnam—an estimated 94,000 children—were victims of online sexual exploitation in the past year.

The risk is real, yet under-reporting remains a significant barrier due to cultural stigma and the lack of clear reporting mechanisms.

The Disrupting Harm in Viet Nam report highlights additional concerns:

0.5% of surveyed children had sexual images of them shared without permission.
2% of 15-17-year-olds had accepted money or gifts in return for sexual images or videos.
1.9% of children received unwanted requests to talk about sex or sexual acts.

These numbers point to a disturbing trend: online grooming is evolving, and children need to be equipped with the skills to recognize manipulative behavior and seek help.

Vietnam’s Response and Challenges to Calls about Child Protection

While Vietnam has made strides with legal frameworks such as the Law on Children and Government Decree No. 147 , gaps still exist:

The law lacks clear definitions for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and online grooming, leading to enforcement challenges.
Victim reporting remains low due to fear of stigma and unclear support services.
Law enforcement units handling child exploitation cases lack specialized training and dedicated resources.

Despite these challenges, Vietnam is actively working towards a safer digital space.

Evidence of this can be found by looking at the National Programme on Child Online Protection for 2021–2025 and Vietnam's participation in ASEAN’s Regional Plan of Action for the Protection of Children from Online Exploitation and Abuse.

These are positive developments.

Parental Involvement: The First Line of Defense for Child Protection Online

Parents play a crucial role in protecting their children online. However, research shows a disconnect between parental restrictions and children's online behavior.

Over 50% of children surveyed said they couldn’t go online when they wanted because caregivers restricted access, yet this does not always translate into increased safety.

Instead of strict bans, parents can:

Educate children about digital risks and responsible online behavior.
Use parental controls and monitor online activity without invading privacy.
Encourage open conversations so children feel comfortable reporting any online concerns.

Schools and Digital Literacy Education

Vietnamese schools must incorporate online safety education into curriculums . While the Vietnamese Children’s Online Protection Club has been promoting awareness, more structured programs are needed. Schools should:

Provide regular training for students and teachers.
Teach critical thinking skills to help students identify misinformation and harmful content.
Encourage safe online engagement, emphasizing the importance of privacy settings and reporting mechanisms.

Teacher Burnout in Vietnamese Bilingual Schools

Teacher burnout hit close to home in Vietnam.

As Managing Director of a K-12 bilingual school in Ho Chi Minh City during the pandemic, I saw the weight teachers carried. Both local and international staff faced challenges that changed them.

Remote teaching strained everyone. The isolation took its toll. And when we returned to classrooms, many teachers brought invisible scars back with them.

Our school was new, still finding its footing when COVID hit. This complicated everything. Teachers adapted, pivoted, and persevered. But there was a cost.

I'm sharing what I observed because teacher burnout isn't just about personal coping strategies. It's about systems, expectations, and support.

This post explores what burnout looked like in our context, what helped, what didn't, and what meaningful change might require.

It's not just teachers who need to adapt - it's everyone involved in education.

Defining Teacher Burnout

What is "teacher burnout?"

It's a slow drain of passion and energy that leaves educators exhausted, detached, and questioning their impact . This occupational hazard develops when teaching demands consistently outpace personal resources.

Christina Maslach , the pioneer researcher in burnout, found that when external pressures exceed coping abilities, the professional flame dims.

For teachers in Vietnam, I saw these pressures intensified dramatically during COVID.

Research from Education Support's Teacher Wellbeing Index shows persistently high levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout among teachers.

In fact, 77% of education staff experience symptoms of poor mental health due to work.

And the pandemic turned this chronic problem into a crisis.

A RAND Corporation study found nearly 7 in 10 teachers reporting significant mental health concerns - a statistic I saw play out in real time across our Ho Chi Minh City classrooms.

Vietnamese teachers faced unique challenges. The Southeast Asian Teachers Competency Framework emphasizes cultural expectations that often prevent educators from acknowledging struggles.

When burnout happens, it can feel like something much more than fatigue.

It is not uncommon for even empathetic and warm teachers to develop cynicism toward students, parents and colleagues.

The sense of accomplishment can whither even while they're working harder than ever.

Addressing burnout in Vietnam's education system requires more than individual coping strategies. It demands structural reform, cultural shifts, and evidence-based interventions that recognize teaching as both an intellectual and emotional profession.

Pandemic-Related Stressors

The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a new set of challenges and stressors for educators, compounding the pre-existing issues that contribute to teacher burnout.

Surveys conducted during the pandemic reveal alarming teacher burnout statistics, with nearly 70% of respondents expressing concerns about their mental health and well-being.

The sudden shift to remote learning, coupled with the fear of contracting the virus, has greatly increased job-related stress among teachers.

For international teachers, the pandemic was particularly isolating. Many expatriate educators working overseas lacked the strong personal support networks they would typically rely on.

Being far from family and navigating lockdowns in an unfamiliar country exacerbated feelings of loneliness. I saw several teachers struggle emotionally, not only with their professional responsibilities but also with a profound sense of disconnection from their support systems.

Studies have shown that the levels of stress and anxiety experienced by educators are strongly correlated with factors such as workload, student behavior, and lack of administrative support.

Overwhelming Workload

One of the most significant factors contributing to teacher burnout is the overwhelming workload that educators face on a daily basis.

Teachers are expected to handle a multitude of tasks, including lesson planning, grading, administrative duties, and managing student behavior, all while working toward providing high-quality instruction.

This excessive workload can lead to increased stress levels and emotional exhaustion, which are key dimensions of burnout.

Studies have shown a strong correlation between burnout and workload, with teachers experiencing higher levels of burnout when their workload is perceived as unmanageable.

The constant pressure to meet deadlines, adapt to changing curriculum requirements, and address the diverse needs of students can leave teachers feeling overwhelmed and drained.

This type of burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment, can have detrimental effects on both the well-being of teachers and the quality of education they provide.

Lack of Support

In addition to the overwhelming workload, another significant contributor to teacher burnout is the lack of support from administrators, colleagues, and the education system as a whole.

Public school teachers often feel isolated and unsupported when dealing with challenging student behaviors and the daily stresses of their job. This lack of support can lead to feelings of frustration, helplessness, and ultimately, burnout.

School administrators play an indispensable role in preventing teacher burnout by fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment.

They should actively listen to teachers' concerns, provide resources and training to help manage stress, and offer guidance in dealing with difficult situations. Additionally, administrators should prioritize the mental health of their staff and create a culture that encourages self-care and work-life balance.

Emotional Toll

Teaching is a deeply emotional profession that requires educators to invest their hearts and minds into their students' well-being and academic success.

The emotional toll of teaching can be profound, with studies revealing high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among educators. Excessive demands on teachers' energy and resources can lead to severe burnout, negatively impacting their mental health and overall well-being.

I remember speaking to a teacher in my school who broke down one day, not because of a single event, but because of accumulated emotional fatigue.

They felt torn between their desire to support their students and their inability to recharge emotionally after months of working in isolation during the pandemic.

These moments are heartbreaking because they show how much teachers care but also how fragile the balance between giving and recovering can become.

To counteract some of this emotional toll, I organized virtual social gatherings during the pandemic.

We experimented with digital platforms where teachers could meet their colleagues, have a drink – albeit remotely – and get to know each other.

These moments of connection gave many staff members a sense of community when they were feeling particularly isolated.

Also, I organized online quizzes with prizes and even art workshops to bring some lighthearted fun into their weeks. Small initiatives like these made a big difference in helping staff feel seen and valued.

But sometimes, not enough.

Job dissatisfaction, often stemming from challenging student behavior and a feeling of lack of administrative support, further exacerbates the effects of stress on teachers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has only heightened these concerns, with nearly 70% of teachers reporting worries about their mental health during this time.

As the emotional toll on educators continues to rise, it is pivotal to prioritize their well-being by providing adequate support, resources, and interventions to address this critical issue.

Student Behavior Challenges

Student misbehavior is a significant source of stress and anxiety for many teachers, often leading to feelings of frustration, helplessness, and burnout. Disruptive classroom behavior can hinder student motivation and learning, while also contributing to high levels of anxiety among educators.

Studies have shown that stress from student behaviour is a major factor in the prevalence of anxiety within the education field.

During my time in Vietnam, I saw how student behavior often became a flashpoint for burnout, especially after the pandemic.

Many students returned to school with heightened social and emotional needs that teachers weren’t fully equipped to address.

For some teachers, managing behavioral challenges felt like yet another mountain to climb, one they didn’t feel prepared for after such an intense period of stress and uncertainty.

Teachers facing constant behavioral challenges may struggle to maintain a positive learning environment, leading to decreased job satisfaction and increased burnout risk.

To address this issue, it is indispensable for school administrators to provide teachers with the necessary support, resources, and training to effectively manage student behavior.

This may include implementing evidence-based classroom management strategies, fostering positive student-teacher relationships, and promoting a school-wide culture of respect and responsibility.

Work-Life Imbalance

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a persistent challenge for many teachers, as the demands of their profession often spill over into their personal lives.

The struggle to juggle lesson planning, grading, and extracurricular responsibilities with family commitments and personal time can take a toll on both physical health and mental well-being.

One thing I observed in my role was how difficult it was for international teachers to maintain any semblance of balance.

Many were living away from their families, which meant that even their personal lives were intertwined with their professional environment.

For example, a teacher once shared that they felt like their apartment was just an extension of the school because it was the only place they had to retreat to, yet they were still grading papers there late into the night.

Experienced educators are not immune to this burnout factor, as even those with years of teaching experience may find it difficult to disconnect from work and fully engage in their personal lives.

When staff were finally able to return to work, I took steps to create a more supportive and relaxing environment. One initiative was bringing in a massage therapist to the teacher lounge to give neck and shoulder massages during breaks.

Teachers appreciated the opportunity to unwind, even if just for a few minutes, and it demonstrated to them that their well-being was a priority.

To combat this issue, schools should consider implementing policies that promote better work-life balance, such as designated mental health days, reasonable workload expectations, and support for teachers' personal and professional development.

A Feeling of Inadequate Compensation

In addition to the challenges of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, it is not uncommon for educators to complain of inadequate compensation as another significant factor contributing to teacher burnout.

Many teachers in public and private schools alike struggle with a sense that they have low salaries in comparison to their workload and that pay fails to reflect the demanding nature of their work.

The long hours spent preparing lessons, grading assignments, and managing classrooms often extend well beyond the official school day.

This perceived discrepancy between workload and compensation can lead to increased anxiety and perceived stress among educators.

And, insufficient pay can make it difficult for teachers to afford essential resources for their own well-being, such as mental health support or stress-reducing activities.

To address this issue, it is imperative for school administrators and policymakers to prioritize fair compensation that acknowledges the critical role teachers play in shaping young minds.

By investing in competitive salaries and benefits, we can help alleviate the financial pressures that contribute to burnout and promote better overall health in teachers.

Ultimately, valuing our educators through adequate compensation is not only a matter of justice but also a pivotal step in ensuring the long-term success and well-being of our educational system.

Strategies for Prevention

Given the alarming prevalence of burnout among educators, it is essential to explore effective strategies for preventing this debilitating condition. A wide range of interventions can be implemented to support teachers' well-being.

Mindfulness practice has shown promise in reducing stress and promoting resilience. Incorporating mindfulness techniques into professional development programs can equip teachers with valuable coping skills.

In addition to mindfulness workshops, I found that organizing interactive activities helped to relieve stress and foster community.

During the pandemic, our school hosted art workshops that encouraged teachers to tap into their creativity. These were a hit and gave many staff members an outlet to decompress.

Whether it was painting or simply chatting with colleagues in a non-work-related setting, it helped reduce stress.

Additionally, fostering a supportive school culture that prioritizes open communication and collaboration can mitigate feelings of isolation and overwhelm.

Relevant studies, including cross-sectional research, have highlighted the importance of proactive measures such as workload management and access to mental health resources.

However, it is indispensable to address methodological issues in future research to develop evidence-based prevention strategies.

When paired with virtual events like quizzes and digital meetups, these activities strengthened the sense of connection among staff, even when physical distance was unavoidable.

Teachers began to feel like they were part of a team again, which significantly boosted morale.

Systemic Changes Needed

While individual interventions can alleviate the symptoms of burnout, addressing the root causes requires systemic changes within the education system.

Primary and secondary school teachers face increasing demands, leading to high levels of anxiety and depression.

During my time as a school managing director, I realized that systemic issues often compounded the personal challenges teachers faced.

For instance, international teachers were not just navigating the complexities of their roles but also dealing with cultural adjustments, language barriers, and, during the pandemic, heightened restrictions that isolated them further. Without intentional systemic support, their stress only grew.

To mitigate these issues, educational institutions must prioritize teacher well-being by implementing policies that reduce workload, improve student behavior management, and provide fair employment conditions.

Fundamentally, schools need to offer substantial support to teachers, as a lack of such support is a significant factor contributing to anxiety.

One of the systemic changes I tried to implement was creating a school culture that emphasized both personal and professional growth.

By offering teachers access to training opportunities and pairing this with initiatives like regular well-being check-ins, we aimed to build a sustainable environment that reduced feelings of burnout.

I also encouraged open feedback, so staff felt empowered to voice their concerns and suggest improvements.

By fostering a supportive work environment and addressing the systemic factors that contribute to burnout, schools can create a healthier and more sustainable teaching profession.

This, in turn, will benefit both teachers and students, as educators who feel valued and supported are better equipped to provide high-quality education.

Ultimately, investing in teacher well-being through systemic changes is essential for the long-term success of our education system, ensuring that dedicated professionals can continue to inspire and guide future generations without sacrificing their own mental health and well-being.

Final Say on Teacher Burnout

Reflecting on my experiences, I can see that preventing teacher burnout requires more than just isolated fixes; it calls for a cultural shift within schools.

Small actions, like the art workshops, massages, and virtual gatherings I introduced, helped alleviate some immediate stress, but they were only part of the solution.

The bigger picture involves rethinking how we approach teacher support, from workload policies to emotional well-being initiatives.

In a world where educators are expected to be superhuman, teacher burnout persists as an ironic reminder of the system's failings. As society demands more from those who shape future generations, it simultaneously neglects their well-being.

The solution lies not in empty platitudes, but in systemic changes that prioritize the mental health and support of educators. Only by valuing the well-being of teachers can the education system hope to thrive and inspire future minds.

Lessons from a Bilingual School Leader in Vietnam

Bilingual education in Vietnam is a big deal—trust me, I know.

After spending 13 years in the country and running a bilingual school for four of those, I've got a story or two to tell.

It’s not just about balancing two languages; it’s about navigating cultural expectations, blending educational systems, and somehow coming out the other side with your sanity intact.

It's not easy.

And in the following post, I'm going to share with you a few lessons that I learned.

The Fast Rise of Bilingual Schools in Vietnam

When I first arrived in Vietnam in 2012 to help with the establishment of a bridging program for British University Vietnam, bilingual schools were barely on the radar.

Fast forward a few years, and they’re everywhere. Parents, eager to give their children a leg up in an increasingly globalized world, are flocking to these educational environments.

They want schools where their kids can excel academically while picking up English like it’s their first language.

Bilingual School systems like the British Vietnamese International School , EMASI Schools , UTS , and Wellspring Schools have become household names.

These private schools are the places parents are betting on for their kids’ futures.

And believe me, that comes with a lot of expectations—both from parents and from the schools themselves.

The pressure to blend the Vietnamese curriculum with international programs isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s about creating a learning environment where students can grow in ways that traditional public schools and full international schools just cannot offer.

Balancing Act: Vietnamese and International Curricula

Running a bilingual school isn’t for the faint of heart.

One of the biggest challenges is making sure the Vietnamese national curriculum and the international curriculum don’t clash.

You’ve got to blend these two approaches so that students can get the best of both worlds.

On a philosophical level, a bilingual education aims to maintain the cultural roots from the Vietnamese side and a global perspective from the international side.

But that’s easier said than done.

The Vietnamese curriculum is known for being tradition and rigorous.

Meanwhile, the international programs we used at EMASI, the Cambridge International, emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Of course, these also exist in the national curriculum, but

Finding the sweet spot where these two systems meet is like trying to fuse two different worlds. It takes a lot of tweaking, experimenting, and yes, sometimes a bit of chaos before you get it right.

English Language Learning in Bilingual Education in Vietnam

Let’s talk about language.

After all, there's a perception that language is what bilingual education is supposed to be about, right?

In Vietnam, students in bilingual schools will juggle languages of instruction—Vietnamese and English—and they need to excel in both.

Vietnamese keeps them grounded in their cultural roots, while English is their ticket to the world.

In practice, this means subjects being taught in both languages, often switching gears from one to the other throughout the day. MOET Math in the morning, Cambridge Math in the afternoon - for example.

(And yes, Vietnamese and Cambridge math are very, very different).

It’s not just about making sure they can write an essay in English and read a poem in Vietnamese; it’s about making sure they’re thinking critically in both languages and on track to achieve in the relevant exams for both.

This dual-language approach is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, and watching students get value from it is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

But it’s not just about hitting those language development milestones. It’s about communication skills—getting students comfortable with public speaking, debates, and just everyday conversations in both languages.

And it's about preparing students for the option of international qualifications like IGCSE, A Levels, Advanced Placement, and even IB.

By the time students of bilingual schools graduate, these kids aren’t just bilingual; the aim is for them to possess global understanding and be ready to step into a multicultural setting without losing sight of where they come from.

Oh yeah, and also have the flexibility to go to university in either local or international universities!

Why Holistic Development Matters

If you think bilingual education is just about language, think again. It’s about the whole student—their emotional, social, and physical well-being.

It's also about creating pathways for students to progress to both local and international programs.

I’m a firm believer in holistic education, and at the school I ran, we made sure that students weren’t just book smart but life smart too.

Extracurricular activities were a big deal for us. We linked it to Personal Excellence from the school mission.

Whether it was sports, arts, or science clubs, these co-curricular and extra-curricular activities weren’t just add-ons; they were essential.

Students learned soft skills, teamwork, self discipline, and critical thinking—skills they’ll use long after they’ve left the classroom.

And yes, we even had events like the EMASI Cross-campus Tournament, where students got to flex their athletic skills and learn a thing or two about resilience and sportsmanship.

Holistic development also includes fostering emotional development and life skills.

We integrated psychological counseling and a program I called the Graduate Ready Program into our educational programs because, let’s face it, growing up is tough.

We wanted our students to be emotionally resilient, able to handle whatever life throws at them, both inside and outside the school.

Vietnam's Excellence in Math and Science

One area where Vietnamese education truly shines is in math and science.

Students here consistently outperform their peers internationally, thanks to a strong emphasis on these subjects from an early age.

The national curriculum is designed to build a solid foundation in natural sciences and mathematical thinking, fostering problem-solving skills and analytical abilities that are second to none.

As an educator (and a person who never excelled at Math or Science despite my best efforts), integrating this strength into our bilingual program was both a priority and a privilege.

We combined traditional Vietnamese teaching methods with modern, inquiry-based approaches from international curricula to create a learning experience that was both rigorous and engaging.

Our students participated in science experiments and math competitions that not only honed their academic performance but also sparked a genuine passion for these fields.

This strong grounding in math and science equips students with the critical skills needed for the fast-evolving job markets of the future, particularly as Asia positions itself as a leader in technology and innovation.

By nurturing these competencies, we’re not just educating students—we’re preparing them to be the innovators and thinkers who will drive progress in Vietnam and beyond.

The High-Wire Act of Integrating International Standards

Now, if you think running a school with two curricula is tricky, try doing it while also meeting international standards. Balancing the rigorous demands of both Vietnamese and international curricula is a high-wire act that requires careful planning and a commitment to maintaining top-notch academic standards.

One of the toughest challenges is figuring out how to assess students.

Vietnamese education traditionally puts a lot of emphasis on final exams, while international curricula often focus on ongoing formative assessment.

Reconciling these two approaches means you’ve got to get creative with your assessment strategies—finding ways to satisfy the needs of both systems without overwhelming the students.

And you also have a system that resonates with a demographic of parents whose exposure to education is often the traditional Vietnamese way.

And then there’s the teachers.

You need more than just qualified teachers.

You also need foreign teachers who are not ethnocentric and local teachers who are not hyper-patriotic.

Basically, you need teachers whose principles are rooted in respect for their colleagues, respect for diversity, respect for local and international education practices, and a willingness to commit their energy and time.

Teachers also need to be able to respect their colleagues on the opposite side of the curriculum and to see that the unifying link between teachers of different cultures is the best interest of students.

If you can find teachers who are fluent in both languages and can also teach in both systems, you're very fortunate.

And even if you find teachers like that, you will still need to reserve a significant budget for a ton of professional development, constant training, and a whole lot of support to keep your teaching staff at the top of their game.

The Teachers Who Make It All Possible

Speaking of teachers, they’re the unsung heroes of bilingual education.

You need a mix of local and foreign teachers, each bringing something unique to the table.

Vietnamese teachers tend to be more formally qualified and stronger at keeping students connected to their cultural roots.

Native teachers introduce them to new ideas and perspectives that are incredibly important when fostering global understanding.

These two groups of teachers need to form a collaboration that, when it works, can create magic in a school.

At EMASI, we aimed to develop teaching staff who could deliver the best of both worlds.

We encouraged a dynamic learning environment where students weren’t just passive recipients of knowledge—they were active participants in their learning process.

That’s the kind of atmosphere where true learning happens, and it’s why I believe bilingual schools have the potential to set new standards in education.

Preparing Students for the Real World

Bilingual schools in Vietnam aren’t just about hitting academic targets; they’re about preparing students for the real world.

As a school leader, I wanted our students to leave school as future leaders, equipped with critical skills like public speaking, logical thinking, and emotional intelligence.

Every school leader will tell you that.

And one of the things I’m most proud of is how we fostered a love of lifelong learning.

Thanks to our commitment to our school library, we saw evidence that our students didn’t see education as something that ended with graduation—it was something that would continue throughout their lives.

Break times saw students increasingly gather in the library to read quietly.

Students jumped at opportunities to patriciate in academic competitions. And 100% of graduating students went onto university programs both in Vietnam and abroad.

In the coming years, I expect to see more bilingual schools popping up, as well as the expansion of existing programs.

The challenge will be to innovate and evolve without losing sight of what makes these schools special—their ability to create students who are not just academically proficient, but also culturally aware and ready to take on the world.

After training over 1,000 school principals across Vietnam and serving as Founding Managing Director of a bilingual school in Ho Chi Minh City, I've witnessed firsthand how Vietnam's education system is preparing for 2025. Here are three critical trends every education leader should understand.

Vietnam is a fast-paced country where change is constant, and public education in Vietnam is no exception.

Since 2012, I’ve worked in Vietnam’s education sector , holding roles in universities and schools.

I’ve trained 1,000 school principals in Hanoi. I taught Business A Levels at Hanoi Amsterdam. I was the Founding Managing Director of a bilingual school in Ho Chi Minh City. We taught the national curriculum, followed Ministry of Education rules, and passed inspections.

These experiences have given me a deep understanding of Vietnam's education system, from policy to practice.

The world—and education in Vietnam—has changed dramatically since 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic and a fast-changing economy have reshaped the sector. It has undergone significant shifts.

In this article, I share my personal observations from working with Vietnamese school leaders at the end of 2024.

While not a scientific study, these insights are informed by over a decade of experience in the field.

Context and Scope of Insights

This post draws on insights from working with a sample of principals in Hanoi, which accounts for 8.5% of Vietnam’s population.

As the country’s political and educational hub, Hanoi often sets trends that influence national education.

Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) centrally governs education from Hanoi. And the provincial Departments of Education and Training (DOET) implement it regionally.

This helps ensure alignment across the country.

But there do of course remain regional differences in terms of demographics and economics and these have an impact.

But, I hope this post can help shed light on national trends shaping Vietnam's education system in 2025.

Vietnamese Teachers Have a Strong Sense of Purpose

Anyone who comes to Vietnam will be impressed by the number of flags everywhere. And if you listen in on a conversation in a coffee shop, you'll hear someone say the word "Viet Nam" at some point almost every few minutes.

In short, Vietnam is an incredibly patriotic country.

And no wonder. They have an incredible history of resilience, determination, resistance to oppression and ultimate victory.

They have fought off invaders from some of the world's biggest powers including China, France, Japan, and of course the United States.

And economically, in just a few decades the country has emerged from hunger and poverty to becoming one of the most inspiring rising stars of Asia.

I've been working in Vietnam since 2012, after being posted here by Taylor's College Malaysia following their investment into British University Vietnam .

In the subsequent years, I have been twice elected to the Board of Directors of EuroCham and helped in small ways on the periphery as the EVFTA agreement between Vietnam and the European Union was signed.

I've also served as General Secretary of Britcham, joining in high level meetings between British businesses and diplomats and Vietnamese officials,

I have had front row seats in high-level discussion and debates as Vietnam navigates and sets its own course for its economic future and I've worked at the grass roots as the education system expands and develops.

My goal in sharing this background is to highlight the unique insights I’ve gained over the years in Vietnam.

People have sometimes asked me, "How do you explain Vietnam's incredible rise?"

I'm not a political scientist, nor an economist, but I do remember this video from the International Monetary Fund about Vietnam's rise and the direct link to its investments in the quality of education.

I’ve also been impressed by the World Bank’s recognition of Vietnam’s education system and its direct connection to the country’s remarkable economic growth.

Vietnam's Education: Open to Global Ideas, Grounded in Local Realities

For the most part, Vietnam's educators are eager to learn from other countries. They welcome new techniques and global perspectives.

The materials we covered included case studies from education systems around the world.

One example we explored was Finland.

Finland’s education system has a strong global reputation. It is highly student-centered, with no homework and no standardized exams. Teachers in Finland are required to hold master’s degrees, and they have significant autonomy in their work.

Vietnamese educators don’t view these systems as something to copy and paste. Instead, they analyze different practices, outcomes, and contexts for inspiration. By looking at global models, they can innovate—or confirm that their own approaches work best.

When comparing Finland to Vietnam, principals noticed both differences and similarities. For instance, teachers in both countries are highly respected. That's a rarity in many parts of the world .

Equity is also a shared value. Both systems prioritize making education accessible. every child has access to quality education, regardless of their background.

We also discussed Finland’s use of project-based learning. Vietnam has started adopting elements of this approach in its schools. However, project-based learning requires significant planning, training, and resources to implement effectively. It’s not a quick fix.

And of course, Finland and Vietnam are very different countries.

Finland’s population is just 5.5 million, while Vietnam’s is just under 100 million. Finland has been a developed country for decades, while Vietnam is aiming for this status by 2050.

Finland’s culture, shaped by its climate, values cooperation for survival. In contrast, Vietnam blends a culture of collaboration with a healthy appreciation for competition.

Exams also remain a cornerstone of Vietnam’s education system. Much like the UK’s A Levels or the US’s AP exams, standardized testing plays a crucial role in measuring progress and preparing Vietnamese students for the future.

School graduation exams aren't about to disappear and it is debatable as to whether they should.

During our discussions, there were occasional moments of defensiveness.

On a few occasions, a principal would stand up and passionately argue that Vietnam already does many of these things, and one even questioned why Finland’s GDP is smaller than Vietnam’s if its system is so great.

This was by no means reflective of the vast majority of the principals. While most principals saw the value of studying other systems, some expressed hesitation.

Interestingly, they critically examined innovative educational approaches to identify mistakes made by other countries and avoid repeating them.

For example, adopting globalized practices without preserving local traditions and values has been a critique of education systems in countries like Singapore .

At the same time, my observation was that Vietnam’s educators are highly pragmatic.

They know their country’s challenges and opportunities are unique. They also know that not every one of international education's “best practice” will fit their schools.

They have budget constraints, for example, which can hamper how much technology can be effectively implemented in classrooms.

This balance of openness and practicality is one of their greatest strengths. It allows them to innovate while staying grounded in their reality.

Vietnam's Educators Are Growing More Confident

Over the last five years, I’ve seen a noticeable change in Vietnam's school leaders.

During my recent training sessions, principals asked sharper questions and were more assertive about their needs.

They seemed more confident in their roles and decisions compared to five years ago. This confidence reflects a shift in how Vietnam's education system views itself on the global stage.

From my perspective, this growing confidence signals a broader change. Principals are no longer looking solely for guidance but are actively shaping their schools’ futures.

Some have introduced free apps like ClassDojo to communicate with families. Others are reaching out to businesses for sponsorships to bring more technology into classrooms.

They’re more willing to advocate for resources, challenge outdated practices, and experiment with new ideas.

When I asked them about their biggest challenges, the answer I often heard was, "old teachers unwilling to change."

This signals to me that they’re making serious changes and bringing disruptions into the classroom.

But one thing hasn’t changed. Vietnamese teachers remain deeply motivated by their role in society. Many see teaching as more than just a job; it’s a way to contribute to their country’s growth.

It’s not unusual to see the image of teachers included in propaganda billboards throughout the country. This patriotic sense of duty continues to drive their work, even as challenges persist.

Five years ago, open discussions about innovations and ideas for education often became debates about budget limits and how to overcome resistance to change by older teachers.

Five years later I observed a noticeable shift toward proactive solutions.

One factor contributing to this confidence is the increased emphasis on professional development.

Training programs, both local and international, have equipped educators with the skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively.

Government initiatives to improve school infrastructure and teacher training have also played a role.

But I want to emphasize that this confidence isn’t just about professional growth.

It’s also tied to a deep sense of responsibility.

Vietnamese educators understand the pivotal role they play in their country’s sustainable development. They’re not just implementing policies; they see their work as shaping the next generation of leaders, innovators, and citizens.

They take their responsibility seriously and they recognize the impact they've made on Vietnam's development.

Vietnamese Educators are Optimistic and Ready for Change

The biggest shift I’ve noticed is their readiness to embrace change. In my first training five years ago, many principals were hesitant to try new approaches.

Today, there’s a clear sense of optimism and motivation to improve. They see change not as a threat, but as an opportunity to grow and innovate.

Vietnam’s education system is evolving rapidly. The last five years have shown how much potential there is for continued progress. With educators this driven and focused, the future looks promising.

Educators see change not as a threat but as an opportunity. They’re embracing new technologies and teaching equipment, exploring creative and active teaching methods, and rethinking traditional classroom dynamics.

For example, digital tools are slowly becoming more common in Vietnamese schools.

While access varies, especially in rural areas, there’s a clear push to integrate technology into everyday learning. This also happens to be a focus of Teach for Vietnam , of which I am an advisory board member.

Teachers are using apps, and chatgpt, thinking about online safety, and looking for accessible online resources to engage students more effectively.

This readiness for change is also evident in how educators approach challenges. They’re finding innovative ways to work within their constraints, whether by forming partnerships with local businesses or leveraging community resources.

Their solutions may not always be high-tech, but they’re practical and impactful.

This optimism is critical as Vietnam’s education system continues to evolve. It’s a reminder that while challenges persist, the drive to improve is stronger than ever. With educators this motivated and resourceful, the future looks bright.

Final Observations about the State of Education in Vietnam in 2025

Vietnam’s education system is at an important crossroads.

What I see is a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation, shaped by a deep sense of purpose and a willingness to adapt.

The country is determined to become a developed nation by 2050 and the educators know their important work will play a big role in making this possible.

They also know they might not get all the resources they need right away to make this happen as smoothly as they would like.

But over the last decade, I’ve seen firsthand how educators are driving this transformation.

I’m confident they will continue to do so.

Whether it’s continuing to be open to global ideas, navigating challenges with pragmatism, or fostering a sense of national pride, Vietnam’s educators are being guided to do what they think is best not just for students but for their country.

By focusing on essential aspects like physical facilities, school organization, teaching materials, teacher support, and school-parent links, Vietnam is creating a solid foundation for quality education.

This important action on inclusion resulted in a total of 278 schools being established, primarily serving ethnic minority students, with an impressive enrollment of 86,000 pupils.

And these schools have been recognized as equivalent to mainstream schools, ensuring that every child receives an equal opportunity to succeed. The government has extended inclusion initiatives to even cover expenses for lunch, tuition, uniforms, and textbooks, ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder a child's education.

While these actions have extended educational opportunity and demonstrated a commitment to diversity, there remains a gap in net enrollment rates and educational attainment between Kinh children and those belonging to ethnic minority groups.
