Safeguarding Children Online in Vietnam

My children were being loud in the restaurant.

My daughter, seven years old, pushed my son, six years old. My son pushed back harder.

We were on the brink of a complete meltdown.

The other diners looked up from their bowls, judging my family.

I knew what would work. I pulled out the phone. I opened YouTube Kids. The kids went quiet.

Crisis averted.

Sound familiar?

In Vietnam, we parents choose this peace a hundred times a day. None of us know what it costs.

And Vietnamese children, like those worldwide, are growing up in a digital landscape full of both opportunities and dangers.

And while the internet provides educational tools and entertainment, its also exposing children to serious cyber risks, including online exploitation, cyberbullying, and privacy breaches.

With 87% of Vietnamese children accessing the internet daily - and the vast majority accessing it through smartphones , it is important that families and schools take these threats seriously.

The Growing Need for Online Safety in Vietnam

Vietnam has taken significant steps to protect children online, recognizing the urgent need to regulate digital spaces.

The Code of Conduct for Protecting Children in the Online Environment, introduced by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC), establishes guidelines for safe digital interaction.

This code targets five groups: parents and teachers, general internet users, media organizations, platform operators, and children themselves.

The goal of this code is to create a safer, more responsible digital environment by encouraging positive online behavior, strengthening privacy protections, and increasing reporting of harmful content.

But unsurprisingly, enforcement remains a challenge.

Awareness is low, and more effective messaging is required to reach families, schools, and technology providers in a way that makes an impact.

Understanding Digital Footprints

Every online action leaves a trace. A comment, a shared image, or a social media post contributes to a child’s digital reputation, potentially affecting future education and job opportunities.

Yet, many Vietnamese children and caregivers underestimate online risks. Only 33% of children ranked talking to online strangers as “very risky” , compared to 52% of caregivers.

Parents and teachers must educate children on responsible sharing and the concept of a “digital tattoo” — the idea that what is posted online can be permanent. Teaching children to pause and think before posting can help them protect their privacy and future.

The Reality of Cyberbullying and Online Exploitation

Cyberbullying is a growing concern, with 14% of internet-using children in Vietnam reporting exposure to sexual content intentionally, and 23% encountering it accidentally.

Meanwhile, 1% of internet users aged 12-17 in Vietnam—an estimated 94,000 children—were victims of online sexual exploitation in the past year.

The risk is real, yet under-reporting remains a significant barrier due to cultural stigma and the lack of clear reporting mechanisms.

The Disrupting Harm in Viet Nam report highlights additional concerns:

0.5% of surveyed children had sexual images of them shared without permission.
2% of 15-17-year-olds had accepted money or gifts in return for sexual images or videos.
1.9% of children received unwanted requests to talk about sex or sexual acts.

These numbers point to a disturbing trend: online grooming is evolving, and children need to be equipped with the skills to recognize manipulative behavior and seek help.

Vietnam’s Response and Challenges to Calls about Child Protection

While Vietnam has made strides with legal frameworks such as the Law on Children and Government Decree No. 147 , gaps still exist:

The law lacks clear definitions for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and online grooming, leading to enforcement challenges.
Victim reporting remains low due to fear of stigma and unclear support services.
Law enforcement units handling child exploitation cases lack specialized training and dedicated resources.

Despite these challenges, Vietnam is actively working towards a safer digital space.

Evidence of this can be found by looking at the National Programme on Child Online Protection for 2021–2025 and Vietnam's participation in ASEAN’s Regional Plan of Action for the Protection of Children from Online Exploitation and Abuse.

These are positive developments.

Parental Involvement: The First Line of Defense for Child Protection Online

Parents play a crucial role in protecting their children online. However, research shows a disconnect between parental restrictions and children's online behavior.

Over 50% of children surveyed said they couldn’t go online when they wanted because caregivers restricted access, yet this does not always translate into increased safety.

Instead of strict bans, parents can:

Educate children about digital risks and responsible online behavior.
Use parental controls and monitor online activity without invading privacy.
Encourage open conversations so children feel comfortable reporting any online concerns.

Schools and Digital Literacy Education

Vietnamese schools must incorporate online safety education into curriculums . While the Vietnamese Children’s Online Protection Club has been promoting awareness, more structured programs are needed. Schools should:

Provide regular training for students and teachers.
Teach critical thinking skills to help students identify misinformation and harmful content.
Encourage safe online engagement, emphasizing the importance of privacy settings and reporting mechanisms.

Teacher Burnout in Vietnamese Bilingual Schools

Teacher burnout hit close to home in Vietnam.

As Managing Director of a K-12 bilingual school in Ho Chi Minh City during the pandemic, I saw the weight teachers carried. Both local and international staff faced challenges that changed them.

Remote teaching strained everyone. The isolation took its toll. And when we returned to classrooms, many teachers brought invisible scars back with them.

Our school was new, still finding its footing when COVID hit. This complicated everything. Teachers adapted, pivoted, and persevered. But there was a cost.

I'm sharing what I observed because teacher burnout isn't just about personal coping strategies. It's about systems, expectations, and support.

This post explores what burnout looked like in our context, what helped, what didn't, and what meaningful change might require.

It's not just teachers who need to adapt - it's everyone involved in education.

Defining Teacher Burnout

What is "teacher burnout?"

It's a slow drain of passion and energy that leaves educators exhausted, detached, and questioning their impact . This occupational hazard develops when teaching demands consistently outpace personal resources.

Christina Maslach , the pioneer researcher in burnout, found that when external pressures exceed coping abilities, the professional flame dims.

For teachers in Vietnam, I saw these pressures intensified dramatically during COVID.

Research from Education Support's Teacher Wellbeing Index shows persistently high levels of stress, anxiety, and burnout among teachers.

In fact, 77% of education staff experience symptoms of poor mental health due to work.

And the pandemic turned this chronic problem into a crisis.

A RAND Corporation study found nearly 7 in 10 teachers reporting significant mental health concerns - a statistic I saw play out in real time across our Ho Chi Minh City classrooms.

Vietnamese teachers faced unique challenges. The Southeast Asian Teachers Competency Framework emphasizes cultural expectations that often prevent educators from acknowledging struggles.

When burnout happens, it can feel like something much more than fatigue.

It is not uncommon for even empathetic and warm teachers to develop cynicism toward students, parents and colleagues.

The sense of accomplishment can whither even while they're working harder than ever.

Addressing burnout in Vietnam's education system requires more than individual coping strategies. It demands structural reform, cultural shifts, and evidence-based interventions that recognize teaching as both an intellectual and emotional profession.

Pandemic-Related Stressors

The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a new set of challenges and stressors for educators, compounding the pre-existing issues that contribute to teacher burnout.

Surveys conducted during the pandemic reveal alarming teacher burnout statistics, with nearly 70% of respondents expressing concerns about their mental health and well-being.

The sudden shift to remote learning, coupled with the fear of contracting the virus, has greatly increased job-related stress among teachers.

For international teachers, the pandemic was particularly isolating. Many expatriate educators working overseas lacked the strong personal support networks they would typically rely on.

Being far from family and navigating lockdowns in an unfamiliar country exacerbated feelings of loneliness. I saw several teachers struggle emotionally, not only with their professional responsibilities but also with a profound sense of disconnection from their support systems.

Studies have shown that the levels of stress and anxiety experienced by educators are strongly correlated with factors such as workload, student behavior, and lack of administrative support.

Overwhelming Workload

One of the most significant factors contributing to teacher burnout is the overwhelming workload that educators face on a daily basis.

Teachers are expected to handle a multitude of tasks, including lesson planning, grading, administrative duties, and managing student behavior, all while working toward providing high-quality instruction.

This excessive workload can lead to increased stress levels and emotional exhaustion, which are key dimensions of burnout.

Studies have shown a strong correlation between burnout and workload, with teachers experiencing higher levels of burnout when their workload is perceived as unmanageable.

The constant pressure to meet deadlines, adapt to changing curriculum requirements, and address the diverse needs of students can leave teachers feeling overwhelmed and drained.

This type of burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion and reduced personal accomplishment, can have detrimental effects on both the well-being of teachers and the quality of education they provide.

Lack of Support

In addition to the overwhelming workload, another significant contributor to teacher burnout is the lack of support from administrators, colleagues, and the education system as a whole.

Public school teachers often feel isolated and unsupported when dealing with challenging student behaviors and the daily stresses of their job. This lack of support can lead to feelings of frustration, helplessness, and ultimately, burnout.

School administrators play an indispensable role in preventing teacher burnout by fostering a supportive and collaborative work environment.

They should actively listen to teachers' concerns, provide resources and training to help manage stress, and offer guidance in dealing with difficult situations. Additionally, administrators should prioritize the mental health of their staff and create a culture that encourages self-care and work-life balance.

Emotional Toll

Teaching is a deeply emotional profession that requires educators to invest their hearts and minds into their students' well-being and academic success.

The emotional toll of teaching can be profound, with studies revealing high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among educators. Excessive demands on teachers' energy and resources can lead to severe burnout, negatively impacting their mental health and overall well-being.

I remember speaking to a teacher in my school who broke down one day, not because of a single event, but because of accumulated emotional fatigue.

They felt torn between their desire to support their students and their inability to recharge emotionally after months of working in isolation during the pandemic.

These moments are heartbreaking because they show how much teachers care but also how fragile the balance between giving and recovering can become.

To counteract some of this emotional toll, I organized virtual social gatherings during the pandemic.

We experimented with digital platforms where teachers could meet their colleagues, have a drink – albeit remotely – and get to know each other.

These moments of connection gave many staff members a sense of community when they were feeling particularly isolated.

Also, I organized online quizzes with prizes and even art workshops to bring some lighthearted fun into their weeks. Small initiatives like these made a big difference in helping staff feel seen and valued.

But sometimes, not enough.

Job dissatisfaction, often stemming from challenging student behavior and a feeling of lack of administrative support, further exacerbates the effects of stress on teachers.

The COVID-19 pandemic has only heightened these concerns, with nearly 70% of teachers reporting worries about their mental health during this time.

As the emotional toll on educators continues to rise, it is pivotal to prioritize their well-being by providing adequate support, resources, and interventions to address this critical issue.

Student Behavior Challenges

Student misbehavior is a significant source of stress and anxiety for many teachers, often leading to feelings of frustration, helplessness, and burnout. Disruptive classroom behavior can hinder student motivation and learning, while also contributing to high levels of anxiety among educators.

Studies have shown that stress from student behaviour is a major factor in the prevalence of anxiety within the education field.

During my time in Vietnam, I saw how student behavior often became a flashpoint for burnout, especially after the pandemic.

Many students returned to school with heightened social and emotional needs that teachers weren’t fully equipped to address.

For some teachers, managing behavioral challenges felt like yet another mountain to climb, one they didn’t feel prepared for after such an intense period of stress and uncertainty.

Teachers facing constant behavioral challenges may struggle to maintain a positive learning environment, leading to decreased job satisfaction and increased burnout risk.

To address this issue, it is indispensable for school administrators to provide teachers with the necessary support, resources, and training to effectively manage student behavior.

This may include implementing evidence-based classroom management strategies, fostering positive student-teacher relationships, and promoting a school-wide culture of respect and responsibility.

Work-Life Imbalance

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is a persistent challenge for many teachers, as the demands of their profession often spill over into their personal lives.

The struggle to juggle lesson planning, grading, and extracurricular responsibilities with family commitments and personal time can take a toll on both physical health and mental well-being.

One thing I observed in my role was how difficult it was for international teachers to maintain any semblance of balance.

Many were living away from their families, which meant that even their personal lives were intertwined with their professional environment.

For example, a teacher once shared that they felt like their apartment was just an extension of the school because it was the only place they had to retreat to, yet they were still grading papers there late into the night.

Experienced educators are not immune to this burnout factor, as even those with years of teaching experience may find it difficult to disconnect from work and fully engage in their personal lives.

When staff were finally able to return to work, I took steps to create a more supportive and relaxing environment. One initiative was bringing in a massage therapist to the teacher lounge to give neck and shoulder massages during breaks.

Teachers appreciated the opportunity to unwind, even if just for a few minutes, and it demonstrated to them that their well-being was a priority.

To combat this issue, schools should consider implementing policies that promote better work-life balance, such as designated mental health days, reasonable workload expectations, and support for teachers' personal and professional development.

A Feeling of Inadequate Compensation

In addition to the challenges of maintaining a healthy work-life balance, it is not uncommon for educators to complain of inadequate compensation as another significant factor contributing to teacher burnout.

Many teachers in public and private schools alike struggle with a sense that they have low salaries in comparison to their workload and that pay fails to reflect the demanding nature of their work.

The long hours spent preparing lessons, grading assignments, and managing classrooms often extend well beyond the official school day.

This perceived discrepancy between workload and compensation can lead to increased anxiety and perceived stress among educators.

And, insufficient pay can make it difficult for teachers to afford essential resources for their own well-being, such as mental health support or stress-reducing activities.

To address this issue, it is imperative for school administrators and policymakers to prioritize fair compensation that acknowledges the critical role teachers play in shaping young minds.

By investing in competitive salaries and benefits, we can help alleviate the financial pressures that contribute to burnout and promote better overall health in teachers.

Ultimately, valuing our educators through adequate compensation is not only a matter of justice but also a pivotal step in ensuring the long-term success and well-being of our educational system.

Strategies for Prevention

Given the alarming prevalence of burnout among educators, it is essential to explore effective strategies for preventing this debilitating condition. A wide range of interventions can be implemented to support teachers' well-being.

Mindfulness practice has shown promise in reducing stress and promoting resilience. Incorporating mindfulness techniques into professional development programs can equip teachers with valuable coping skills.

In addition to mindfulness workshops, I found that organizing interactive activities helped to relieve stress and foster community.

During the pandemic, our school hosted art workshops that encouraged teachers to tap into their creativity. These were a hit and gave many staff members an outlet to decompress.

Whether it was painting or simply chatting with colleagues in a non-work-related setting, it helped reduce stress.

Additionally, fostering a supportive school culture that prioritizes open communication and collaboration can mitigate feelings of isolation and overwhelm.

Relevant studies, including cross-sectional research, have highlighted the importance of proactive measures such as workload management and access to mental health resources.

However, it is indispensable to address methodological issues in future research to develop evidence-based prevention strategies.

When paired with virtual events like quizzes and digital meetups, these activities strengthened the sense of connection among staff, even when physical distance was unavoidable.

Teachers began to feel like they were part of a team again, which significantly boosted morale.

Systemic Changes Needed

While individual interventions can alleviate the symptoms of burnout, addressing the root causes requires systemic changes within the education system.

Primary and secondary school teachers face increasing demands, leading to high levels of anxiety and depression.

During my time as a school managing director, I realized that systemic issues often compounded the personal challenges teachers faced.

For instance, international teachers were not just navigating the complexities of their roles but also dealing with cultural adjustments, language barriers, and, during the pandemic, heightened restrictions that isolated them further. Without intentional systemic support, their stress only grew.

To mitigate these issues, educational institutions must prioritize teacher well-being by implementing policies that reduce workload, improve student behavior management, and provide fair employment conditions.

Fundamentally, schools need to offer substantial support to teachers, as a lack of such support is a significant factor contributing to anxiety.

One of the systemic changes I tried to implement was creating a school culture that emphasized both personal and professional growth.

By offering teachers access to training opportunities and pairing this with initiatives like regular well-being check-ins, we aimed to build a sustainable environment that reduced feelings of burnout.

I also encouraged open feedback, so staff felt empowered to voice their concerns and suggest improvements.

By fostering a supportive work environment and addressing the systemic factors that contribute to burnout, schools can create a healthier and more sustainable teaching profession.

This, in turn, will benefit both teachers and students, as educators who feel valued and supported are better equipped to provide high-quality education.

Ultimately, investing in teacher well-being through systemic changes is essential for the long-term success of our education system, ensuring that dedicated professionals can continue to inspire and guide future generations without sacrificing their own mental health and well-being.

Final Say on Teacher Burnout

Reflecting on my experiences, I can see that preventing teacher burnout requires more than just isolated fixes; it calls for a cultural shift within schools.

Small actions, like the art workshops, massages, and virtual gatherings I introduced, helped alleviate some immediate stress, but they were only part of the solution.

The bigger picture involves rethinking how we approach teacher support, from workload policies to emotional well-being initiatives.

In a world where educators are expected to be superhuman, teacher burnout persists as an ironic reminder of the system's failings. As society demands more from those who shape future generations, it simultaneously neglects their well-being.

The solution lies not in empty platitudes, but in systemic changes that prioritize the mental health and support of educators. Only by valuing the well-being of teachers can the education system hope to thrive and inspire future minds.

Lessons from a Bilingual School Leader in Vietnam

Bilingual education in Vietnam is a big deal—trust me, I know.

After spending 13 years in the country and running a bilingual school for four of those, I've got a story or two to tell.

It’s not just about balancing two languages; it’s about navigating cultural expectations, blending educational systems, and somehow coming out the other side with your sanity intact.

It's not easy.

And in the following post, I'm going to share with you a few lessons that I learned.

The Fast Rise of Bilingual Schools in Vietnam

When I first arrived in Vietnam in 2012 to help with the establishment of a bridging program for British University Vietnam, bilingual schools were barely on the radar.

Fast forward a few years, and they’re everywhere. Parents, eager to give their children a leg up in an increasingly globalized world, are flocking to these educational environments.

They want schools where their kids can excel academically while picking up English like it’s their first language.

Bilingual School systems like the British Vietnamese International School , EMASI Schools , UTS , and Wellspring Schools have become household names.

These private schools are the places parents are betting on for their kids’ futures.

And believe me, that comes with a lot of expectations—both from parents and from the schools themselves.

The pressure to blend the Vietnamese curriculum with international programs isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s about creating a learning environment where students can grow in ways that traditional public schools and full international schools just cannot offer.

Balancing Act: Vietnamese and International Curricula

Running a bilingual school isn’t for the faint of heart.

One of the biggest challenges is making sure the Vietnamese national curriculum and the international curriculum don’t clash.

You’ve got to blend these two approaches so that students can get the best of both worlds.

On a philosophical level, a bilingual education aims to maintain the cultural roots from the Vietnamese side and a global perspective from the international side.

But that’s easier said than done.

The Vietnamese curriculum is known for being tradition and rigorous.

Meanwhile, the international programs we used at EMASI, the Cambridge International, emphasizes creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

Of course, these also exist in the national curriculum, but

Finding the sweet spot where these two systems meet is like trying to fuse two different worlds. It takes a lot of tweaking, experimenting, and yes, sometimes a bit of chaos before you get it right.

English Language Learning in Bilingual Education in Vietnam

Let’s talk about language.

After all, there's a perception that language is what bilingual education is supposed to be about, right?

In Vietnam, students in bilingual schools will juggle languages of instruction—Vietnamese and English—and they need to excel in both.

Vietnamese keeps them grounded in their cultural roots, while English is their ticket to the world.

In practice, this means subjects being taught in both languages, often switching gears from one to the other throughout the day. MOET Math in the morning, Cambridge Math in the afternoon - for example.

(And yes, Vietnamese and Cambridge math are very, very different).

It’s not just about making sure they can write an essay in English and read a poem in Vietnamese; it’s about making sure they’re thinking critically in both languages and on track to achieve in the relevant exams for both.

This dual-language approach is a bit like a jigsaw puzzle, and watching students get value from it is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

But it’s not just about hitting those language development milestones. It’s about communication skills—getting students comfortable with public speaking, debates, and just everyday conversations in both languages.

And it's about preparing students for the option of international qualifications like IGCSE, A Levels, Advanced Placement, and even IB.

By the time students of bilingual schools graduate, these kids aren’t just bilingual; the aim is for them to possess global understanding and be ready to step into a multicultural setting without losing sight of where they come from.

Oh yeah, and also have the flexibility to go to university in either local or international universities!

Why Holistic Development Matters

If you think bilingual education is just about language, think again. It’s about the whole student—their emotional, social, and physical well-being.

It's also about creating pathways for students to progress to both local and international programs.

I’m a firm believer in holistic education, and at the school I ran, we made sure that students weren’t just book smart but life smart too.

Extracurricular activities were a big deal for us. We linked it to Personal Excellence from the school mission.

Whether it was sports, arts, or science clubs, these co-curricular and extra-curricular activities weren’t just add-ons; they were essential.

Students learned soft skills, teamwork, self discipline, and critical thinking—skills they’ll use long after they’ve left the classroom.

And yes, we even had events like the EMASI Cross-campus Tournament, where students got to flex their athletic skills and learn a thing or two about resilience and sportsmanship.

Holistic development also includes fostering emotional development and life skills.

We integrated psychological counseling and a program I called the Graduate Ready Program into our educational programs because, let’s face it, growing up is tough.

We wanted our students to be emotionally resilient, able to handle whatever life throws at them, both inside and outside the school.

Vietnam's Excellence in Math and Science

One area where Vietnamese education truly shines is in math and science.

Students here consistently outperform their peers internationally, thanks to a strong emphasis on these subjects from an early age.

The national curriculum is designed to build a solid foundation in natural sciences and mathematical thinking, fostering problem-solving skills and analytical abilities that are second to none.

As an educator (and a person who never excelled at Math or Science despite my best efforts), integrating this strength into our bilingual program was both a priority and a privilege.

We combined traditional Vietnamese teaching methods with modern, inquiry-based approaches from international curricula to create a learning experience that was both rigorous and engaging.

Our students participated in science experiments and math competitions that not only honed their academic performance but also sparked a genuine passion for these fields.

This strong grounding in math and science equips students with the critical skills needed for the fast-evolving job markets of the future, particularly as Asia positions itself as a leader in technology and innovation.

By nurturing these competencies, we’re not just educating students—we’re preparing them to be the innovators and thinkers who will drive progress in Vietnam and beyond.

The High-Wire Act of Integrating International Standards

Now, if you think running a school with two curricula is tricky, try doing it while also meeting international standards. Balancing the rigorous demands of both Vietnamese and international curricula is a high-wire act that requires careful planning and a commitment to maintaining top-notch academic standards.

One of the toughest challenges is figuring out how to assess students.

Vietnamese education traditionally puts a lot of emphasis on final exams, while international curricula often focus on ongoing formative assessment.

Reconciling these two approaches means you’ve got to get creative with your assessment strategies—finding ways to satisfy the needs of both systems without overwhelming the students.

And you also have a system that resonates with a demographic of parents whose exposure to education is often the traditional Vietnamese way.

And then there’s the teachers.

You need more than just qualified teachers.

You also need foreign teachers who are not ethnocentric and local teachers who are not hyper-patriotic.

Basically, you need teachers whose principles are rooted in respect for their colleagues, respect for diversity, respect for local and international education practices, and a willingness to commit their energy and time.

Teachers also need to be able to respect their colleagues on the opposite side of the curriculum and to see that the unifying link between teachers of different cultures is the best interest of students.

If you can find teachers who are fluent in both languages and can also teach in both systems, you're very fortunate.

And even if you find teachers like that, you will still need to reserve a significant budget for a ton of professional development, constant training, and a whole lot of support to keep your teaching staff at the top of their game.

The Teachers Who Make It All Possible

Speaking of teachers, they’re the unsung heroes of bilingual education.

You need a mix of local and foreign teachers, each bringing something unique to the table.

Vietnamese teachers tend to be more formally qualified and stronger at keeping students connected to their cultural roots.

Native teachers introduce them to new ideas and perspectives that are incredibly important when fostering global understanding.

These two groups of teachers need to form a collaboration that, when it works, can create magic in a school.

At EMASI, we aimed to develop teaching staff who could deliver the best of both worlds.

We encouraged a dynamic learning environment where students weren’t just passive recipients of knowledge—they were active participants in their learning process.

That’s the kind of atmosphere where true learning happens, and it’s why I believe bilingual schools have the potential to set new standards in education.

Preparing Students for the Real World

Bilingual schools in Vietnam aren’t just about hitting academic targets; they’re about preparing students for the real world.

As a school leader, I wanted our students to leave school as future leaders, equipped with critical skills like public speaking, logical thinking, and emotional intelligence.

Every school leader will tell you that.

And one of the things I’m most proud of is how we fostered a love of lifelong learning.

Thanks to our commitment to our school library, we saw evidence that our students didn’t see education as something that ended with graduation—it was something that would continue throughout their lives.

Break times saw students increasingly gather in the library to read quietly.

Students jumped at opportunities to patriciate in academic competitions. And 100% of graduating students went onto university programs both in Vietnam and abroad.

And as a school, I feel we could sleep at night knowing we were preparing students not just for university studies at prestigious universities, but for life, giving them the tools to adapt to whatever the future holds.

As a parent of two kids who are mixed Vietnamese and Canadian, my belief in bilingual education isn’t just professional—it’s deeply personal.

As the country continues to develop, the demand for schools that can offer a blend of local and international education will only increase.

The key will be for these schools to stay true to their cultural roots while embracing the best of international education.

In the coming years, I expect to see more bilingual schools popping up, as well as the expansion of existing programs.

The challenge will be to innovate and evolve without losing sight of what makes these schools special—their ability to create students who are not just academically proficient, but also culturally aware and ready to take on the world.

Running a bilingual school in Vietnam was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. It’s not just about education; it’s about shaping the minds and futures of the next generation.

After training over 1,000 school principals across Vietnam and serving as Founding Managing Director of a bilingual school in Ho Chi Minh City, I've witnessed firsthand how Vietnam's education system is preparing for 2025. Here are three critical trends every education leader should understand.

Vietnam is a fast-paced country where change is constant, and public education in Vietnam is no exception.

Since 2012, I’ve worked in Vietnam’s education sector , holding roles in universities and schools.

I’ve trained 1,000 school principals in Hanoi. I taught Business A Levels at Hanoi Amsterdam. I was the Founding Managing Director of a bilingual school in Ho Chi Minh City. We taught the national curriculum, followed Ministry of Education rules, and passed inspections.

These experiences have given me a deep understanding of Vietnam's education system, from policy to practice.

The world—and education in Vietnam—has changed dramatically since 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic and a fast-changing economy have reshaped the sector. It has undergone significant shifts.

In this article, I share my personal observations from working with Vietnamese school leaders at the end of 2024.

While not a scientific study, these insights are informed by over a decade of experience in the field.

Context and Scope of Insights

This post draws on insights from working with a sample of principals in Hanoi, which accounts for 8.5% of Vietnam’s population.

As the country’s political and educational hub, Hanoi often sets trends that influence national education.

Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) centrally governs education from Hanoi. And the provincial Departments of Education and Training (DOET) implement it regionally.

This helps ensure alignment across the country.

But there do of course remain regional differences in terms of demographics and economics and these have an impact.

But, I hope this post can help shed light on national trends shaping Vietnam's education system in 2025.

Vietnamese Teachers Have a Strong Sense of Purpose

Anyone who comes to Vietnam will be impressed by the number of flags everywhere. And if you listen in on a conversation in a coffee shop, you'll hear someone say the word "Viet Nam" at some point almost every few minutes.

In short, Vietnam is an incredibly patriotic country.

And no wonder. They have an incredible history of resilience, determination, resistance to oppression and ultimate victory.

They have fought off invaders from some of the world's biggest powers including China, France, Japan, and of course the United States.

And economically, in just a few decades the country has emerged from hunger and poverty to becoming one of the most inspiring rising stars of Asia.

I've been working in Vietnam since 2012, after being posted here by Taylor's College Malaysia following their investment into British University Vietnam .

In the subsequent years, I have been twice elected to the Board of Directors of EuroCham and helped in small ways on the periphery as the EVFTA agreement between Vietnam and the European Union was signed.

I've also served as General Secretary of Britcham, joining in high level meetings between British businesses and diplomats and Vietnamese officials,

I have had front row seats in high-level discussion and debates as Vietnam navigates and sets its own course for its economic future and I've worked at the grass roots as the education system expands and develops.

My goal in sharing this background is to highlight the unique insights I’ve gained over the years in Vietnam.

People have sometimes asked me, "How do you explain Vietnam's incredible rise?"

I'm not a political scientist, nor an economist, but I do remember this video from the International Monetary Fund about Vietnam's rise and the direct link to its investments in the quality of education.

I’ve also been impressed by the World Bank’s recognition of Vietnam’s education system and its direct connection to the country’s remarkable economic growth.

Vietnam's Education: Open to Global Ideas, Grounded in Local Realities

For the most part, Vietnam's educators are eager to learn from other countries. They welcome new techniques and global perspectives.

The materials we covered included case studies from education systems around the world.

One example we explored was Finland.

Finland’s education system has a strong global reputation. It is highly student-centered, with no homework and no standardized exams. Teachers in Finland are required to hold master’s degrees, and they have significant autonomy in their work.

Vietnamese educators don’t view these systems as something to copy and paste. Instead, they analyze different practices, outcomes, and contexts for inspiration. By looking at global models, they can innovate—or confirm that their own approaches work best.

When comparing Finland to Vietnam, principals noticed both differences and similarities. For instance, teachers in both countries are highly respected. That's a rarity in many parts of the world .

Equity is also a shared value. Both systems prioritize making education accessible. every child has access to quality education, regardless of their background.

We also discussed Finland’s use of project-based learning. Vietnam has started adopting elements of this approach in its schools. However, project-based learning requires significant planning, training, and resources to implement effectively. It’s not a quick fix.

And of course, Finland and Vietnam are very different countries.

Finland’s population is just 5.5 million, while Vietnam’s is just under 100 million. Finland has been a developed country for decades, while Vietnam is aiming for this status by 2050.

Finland’s culture, shaped by its climate, values cooperation for survival. In contrast, Vietnam blends a culture of collaboration with a healthy appreciation for competition.

Exams also remain a cornerstone of Vietnam’s education system. Much like the UK’s A Levels or the US’s AP exams, standardized testing plays a crucial role in measuring progress and preparing Vietnamese students for the future.

School graduation exams aren't about to disappear and it is debatable as to whether they should.

During our discussions, there were occasional moments of defensiveness.

On a few occasions, a principal would stand up and passionately argue that Vietnam already does many of these things, and one even questioned why Finland’s GDP is smaller than Vietnam’s if its system is so great.

This was by no means reflective of the vast majority of the principals. While most principals saw the value of studying other systems, some expressed hesitation.

Interestingly, they critically examined innovative educational approaches to identify mistakes made by other countries and avoid repeating them.

For example, adopting globalized practices without preserving local traditions and values has been a critique of education systems in countries like Singapore .

At the same time, my observation was that Vietnam’s educators are highly pragmatic.

They know their country’s challenges and opportunities are unique. They also know that not every one of international education's “best practice” will fit their schools.

They have budget constraints, for example, which can hamper how much technology can be effectively implemented in classrooms.

This balance of openness and practicality is one of their greatest strengths. It allows them to innovate while staying grounded in their reality.

Vietnam's Educators Are Growing More Confident

Over the last five years, I’ve seen a noticeable change in Vietnam's school leaders.

During my recent training sessions, principals asked sharper questions and were more assertive about their needs.

They seemed more confident in their roles and decisions compared to five years ago. This confidence reflects a shift in how Vietnam's education system views itself on the global stage.

From my perspective, this growing confidence signals a broader change. Principals are no longer looking solely for guidance but are actively shaping their schools’ futures.

Some have introduced free apps like ClassDojo to communicate with families. Others are reaching out to businesses for sponsorships to bring more technology into classrooms.

They’re more willing to advocate for resources, challenge outdated practices, and experiment with new ideas.

When I asked them about their biggest challenges, the answer I often heard was, "old teachers unwilling to change."

This signals to me that they’re making serious changes and bringing disruptions into the classroom.

But one thing hasn’t changed. Vietnamese teachers remain deeply motivated by their role in society. Many see teaching as more than just a job; it’s a way to contribute to their country’s growth.

It’s not unusual to see the image of teachers included in propaganda billboards throughout the country. This patriotic sense of duty continues to drive their work, even as challenges persist.

Five years ago, open discussions about innovations and ideas for education often became debates about budget limits and how to overcome resistance to change by older teachers.

Five years later I observed a noticeable shift toward proactive solutions.

One factor contributing to this confidence is the increased emphasis on professional development.

Training programs, both local and international, have equipped educators with the skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively.

Government initiatives to improve school infrastructure and teacher training have also played a role.

But I want to emphasize that this confidence isn’t just about professional growth.

It’s also tied to a deep sense of responsibility.

Vietnamese educators understand the pivotal role they play in their country’s sustainable development. They’re not just implementing policies; they see their work as shaping the next generation of leaders, innovators, and citizens.

They take their responsibility seriously and they recognize the impact they've made on Vietnam's development.

Vietnamese Educators are Optimistic and Ready for Change

The biggest shift I’ve noticed is their readiness to embrace change. In my first training five years ago, many principals were hesitant to try new approaches.

Today, there’s a clear sense of optimism and motivation to improve. They see change not as a threat, but as an opportunity to grow and innovate.

Vietnam’s education system is evolving rapidly. The last five years have shown how much potential there is for continued progress. With educators this driven and focused, the future looks promising.

Educators see change not as a threat but as an opportunity. They’re embracing new technologies and teaching equipment, exploring creative and active teaching methods, and rethinking traditional classroom dynamics.

For example, digital tools are slowly becoming more common in Vietnamese schools.

While access varies, especially in rural areas, there’s a clear push to integrate technology into everyday learning. This also happens to be a focus of Teach for Vietnam , of which I am an advisory board member.

Teachers are using apps, and chatgpt, thinking about online safety, and looking for accessible online resources to engage students more effectively.

This readiness for change is also evident in how educators approach challenges. They’re finding innovative ways to work within their constraints, whether by forming partnerships with local businesses or leveraging community resources.

Their solutions may not always be high-tech, but they’re practical and impactful.

This optimism is critical as Vietnam’s education system continues to evolve. It’s a reminder that while challenges persist, the drive to improve is stronger than ever. With educators this motivated and resourceful, the future looks bright.

Final Observations about the State of Education in Vietnam in 2025

Vietnam’s education system is at an important crossroads.

What I see is a dynamic blend of tradition and innovation, shaped by a deep sense of purpose and a willingness to adapt.

The country is determined to become a developed nation by 2050 and the educators know their important work will play a big role in making this possible.

They also know they might not get all the resources they need right away to make this happen as smoothly as they would like.

But over the last decade, I’ve seen firsthand how educators are driving this transformation.

I’m confident they will continue to do so.

Whether it’s continuing to be open to global ideas, navigating challenges with pragmatism, or fostering a sense of national pride, Vietnam’s educators are being guided to do what they think is best not just for students but for their country.

One thing is clear to me: Vietnam is a fast paced, ambitious country thanks in large part to teachers and school leaders who are determined and driven to develop their country.

In June 2023, EMASI Schools achieved a remarkable feat by winning the Great Education Award from the British Chamber Of Commerce Vietnam . This award is a testament to our commitment to educational excellence and innovation.

In this short update, I want to share the journey and the philosophies that guided us to this prestigious recognition.

The EMASI Approach

Our application for the Great Education Award was rooted in EMASI’s unique educational philosophy and in particular to the role that art plays in fostering the school's mission.

Joining me in making the application was our excellent and totally committed Art teacher, Mr. Duke Phung, as well as EMASI school's Art partner, The Nguyen Art Foundation.

EMASI prioritizes a comprehensive approach, focusing on English, Math, Arts, Science, and ICT (EMASI) - key competencies essential for student development and the mission is robust but meaningful:

The EMASI mission is to provide an outstanding education delivered in Vietnamese and English that emphasizes, particularly Vietnamese values, academic and personal excellence and fosters global understanding, respect and independent learning.

When you read that mission, you will notice that the objective of the school is not just to provide an international education, or emphasize global citizenship, but to help cultivate Vietnamese citizens who maintain their culture and commitment to their country in addition to having the ability to succeed and contribute anywhere and everywhere.

Art at the Heart of EMASI

Although not exclusively an art school, the 'A' in EMASI truly stands at the heart of the EMASI schools' ethos.

The curriculum integrates arts deeply into the educational experience, fostering global understanding, emphasizing Vietnamese values, nurturing creativity, and driving community engagement with impactful social initiatives.

The schools are fortunate to have very passionate Art teachers from around the world and this is fundamentally a tribute to the passion that the owner and co-founder of the schools feel for arts, education and Vietnam.

What better embodiment of that partnership and collaboration than a school that doesn't abandon its Vietnamese culture for internationalism, but rather compliments its Vietnamese identity with an appreciation of British education and international understanding?

And what better tool for fostering this objective than the Arts? It is truly a meaningful approach and makes for a compelling read to the judges - which included members of the British consulate as well as members of the British Chamber of Commerce.

As we start 2024, I invite our school community to reflect on the wonderful progress and accomplishments we shared in 2023. Here are five highlights from semester 1:

1. Cultural Activities: Our students fully immersed themselves in the spirit of Christmas, Full Moon Festival, and Halloween. Student participation in these events helped foster global understanding and emphasize Vietnamese values from our school mission.

2. Academic Updates: We successfully launched the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) program. This will provide our students with an internationally recognized qualification. Our students continued to achieve great results in academic competitions, including the Excellent Student Competition.

Dear Friends,

March was certainly a month that brought out the best of our school community in every aspect of our mission.

From encouraging personal excellence and fitness through athletic competition, pursuing academic excellence through our academic exams for Cambridge and MOET, we emphasized Vietnamese values and respect through our Women’s Day celebration; and we fostered global understanding by welcoming students and teachers from the UK for a two day cultural exchange. This month had it all.

Parent Partnership in your Child's Journey

Everything that we’re doing serves one main purpose: To develop your children to be happy, healthy, responsible, and empowered people, capable and motivated to reach their full positive potential.

Next week, families will be receiving updates regarding their children’s progress in both MOET and the International Program. The objective of this is to help ensure families are aware of their child's progress and to arrange meetings where necessary so collaboration can take place on finding solutions to any possible challenges.

From the International Program, families will receive a progress report which will include an effort score.

The A in EMASI is for ART

As you may know, our school community annually produces a book based on our school values. You can find last year’s e-book at www.emasibook.com

This year we continue this excellent tradition and once again, we’re calling on our students, teachers and even families to contribute art, poetry, even videos of dance and musical performances. The theme of this year’s book is Global Understanding – directly from our Mission Statement. You can submit work for this very meaningful project here. Together we can bring our school values to life.

And not many schools in the world have a dedicated art gallery. We are one of the fortunate few. And you’re invited to visit and enjoy the incredible exhibit we currently have on display called 'No more, not yet.' You can learn more about the exhibit here .

The exhibit is open from 10 am to 4 pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. Families can also make an appointment to visit by contacting our school’s Art Space Manager, Mr Nhat Vo.

Women's Day

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I would like to extend warm wishes to all of the wonderful women in our vibrant school community.

Women’s Day is a very meaningful day at EMASI Van Phuc. We are blessed to have inspiring and strong women on our leadership team, faculty and staff and in all of our EMASI families.

Together our school is committed to developing our girls to be confident, empowered and ready to flourish in an everchanging world.

Women’s Day is also a time for us to reflect on how the men and boys of our community can be the best friends, partners and supporters of women.

Basketball Updates

Our EMASI Van Phuc community can celebrate the successes of our Boys Basketball Team led by their dedicated Coach Mr Sang. The team has made history for our school by winning the Thu Duc City Championship, competing in the HCMC Championship and this weekend winning a friendly tournament at Vinschool.

Not only have our players displayed great talent and commitment, but also inspiring sportsmanship. They have been respectful to all their opponents and have been winners both on and off the court. Well done team!

The A in EMASI is for ART

Cambridge Mock Tests

This is the time of year where teachers conduct the second round of Cambridge Mock Tests to measure student progress and to get students comfortable with the Cambridge style of testing. First of all, I want to extend to you warm greetings for the Lunar New Year.

This week marked not only the end of the year of the Tiger, but also the last week of the first semester.

Take a look at the exciting highlights from our special High Five at the bottom of this post.

The highlights, I'm pleased to report include:

· Parent Teacher Conference - strong family partnerships with the school and discussions about strategies for individual student success

· Secondary Physics Games - engaging application of Physics principles through games and friendly competition.

· Internet of English Competition - our wonderful team consistently finds opportunities for students to challenge themselves and grow their talents and language ability through competition.

· Elementary Closing Ceremony - the end of the first semester presents an opportunity for reflection and celebration for our elementary students.

· Secondary Closing Ceremony - We launch into 2023 with a great ceremony to congratulate students on a successful first semester of the academic year.

As I shared with our students, it is very fortunate that one calendar year finishes and another begins in the middle of an academic year.

Why?

Because the end of a year is an opportunity for reflection. And the start of a year is an opportunity for goal setting.

Students can reflect on their achievements and areas requiring improvement from the first semester and make new goals and actions plans for the year ahead.

2022 was a great year that saw our community continue to grow together and achieve so much. Thank you for your trust and participation.

EMASI Van Phuc has a growth mindset and as we progress through our fourth year of operations, we continuously improve. You will see this accelerate in 2023.

While the school officially begins our winter holiday, secondary students will sit for MOET exams until December 23. Classes will officially resume Tuesday January 3.

This month saw us connect as a community in meaningful events like Teacher’s Day to give thanks to our dedicated educators. We came together by the hundreds for the Fun Run to make a difference through charity and fitness. And we connected with business leaders from Astra Zeneca, Fram^, and Girls in Tech to give our students the best support for their Science and Technology projects.

And we have a lot of exciting developments taking place at our school and more on the horizon.

Friday we have our school’s Christmas Bazaar from 4:30 to 7:00 pm. EMASI families can join some fun games, enjoy some food and buy goods from our school community.

From Monday we will begin to use our electronic gate to further reinforce the safety and security of our students. Families are reminded to bring their parent card when coming on campus as this will grant you access at pick up time.

I’m also thrilled to share with you the good news that EMASI schools will be launching the Cambridge IGCSE program for students in grade 9 in the 2023-2024 academic school year. More details of this exciting program will be shared soon. The Cambridge IGCSE program will provide another opportunity for our students to access the world’s best universities and is connected to our school’s mission of providing an outstanding education in English and Vietnamese.

As we approach the end of 2022, we have important milestones to achieve together.

Students have exams on the horizon and should begin to prepare.

Students will soon also be signing up for new extra-curricular activities in Semester 2 in our Personal Excellence Program. Families will be receiving a link to a Microsoft SharePoint in Semester 2 and will again use their child’s email account to help select their options. In Semester 2, students will choose options from four categories linked to our Mission Statement. These include: Athletics, Academics, Life Skills, and the Arts. The aim is to help our students become well rounded.

Families are reminded to collect their children from school before 5:30. Late pickup of students will entail a late charge.

I am so pleased to share with you this week’s High 5 video featuring five highlights from a rich and engaging week for students at EMASI Van Phuc.

What do Astra Zeneca, Girls in Tech and the European Engineering company Fram^ all have in common? Apart from being innovative science and Technology drive organizations, they also sent very senior representatives to be judges in our recent EMASI Science and Technology Competition.

And we ended the week with a great show of community unity at the Britcham Fun Run. Hundreds of our EMASI families came out for the 5km walk to raise money for meaningful charities in Vietnam. Well done to all who participated, overcame the heat and made a difference!

We’ve just finished a fantastic September together as a school community. Our first complete month of the year.

I’m thrilled to share with you five highlights in the September High Five video.

October also promises to be a month bursting with excitement for our students. This will include a combination of both academic and athletic events that will help them grow.

We will have our mid-semester break the week of October 19-23.

This was very timely since this week we launched our new Personal Excellence Program for students to explore their interests and develop skills through extracurricular activities in 4 pillars:

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year from EMASI Van Phuc!

As usual, parents can expect to receive regular communication from our school this year. Parents want to know about their child’s week at school. And so I want to make sure our communication is effective, relevant, and informative for our families.

2021-2022 Overview

It certainly started as a turbulent school year.

We were locked in our homes. The news reports flooding into our homes was distressing. The pandemic was all around us, affecting our families, our health, our community.

Our entire community courageously faced the challenge. Our teaching and learning underwent a digital transformation and we adapted and navigated the challenges together. We grew together. We learned together.

And despite such an unusual start of the year, I’m pleased to report that our school year ended with all the familiarities of a regular school year.

As the school year ends, the lockdown seems like a far-off memory. In the past few months, students have had field trips, they have selected and enjoyed a variety of extra-curricular activities, they have had swimming lessons, sports activities, house events, in-person assemblies, and they made unforgettable memories with their teachers and classmates.

In the words of our beloved Head of School Ms Cuc “Thank you to EMASI families for your partnership and trust this year.”

We really are partners. We both want your children to have happy, healthy and meaningful

While our school year has ended, our work for your child's education continues.

Just this week our school signed an agreement with leading university placement organization Cialfo.

Cialfo is used by some of the region’s top international schools and they will be helping our students, counsellors and families with the university application process including selection and even scholarships.

Parents of grade 10-12 students will have an info session in the coming months and students will be sent access codes and receive training in the program shortly.

The end of the year is just one week away, and summer will begin soon.

We can look back with fondness at a full and rich month of May at EMASI Van Phuc.

As we reflect on the highlights of May, it's important to recognize the tremendous growth and achievements of our students, faculty, and community throughout the month.

One standout moment was our annual Sports Day, where students showcased their athletic skills and teamwork, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition.

Additionally, we celebrated our students' academic accomplishments during the Awards Ceremony, where many received recognition for their hard work and dedication.

The month also featured engaging workshops and guest speakers who inspired our students to pursue their passions and think critically about their futures.

As we wrap up this school year, we can be proud of the resilience and creativity displayed by everyone at EMASI Van Phuc, laying a strong foundation for the exciting adventures that await us in the summer and beyond.

April 2022 Overview

This week’s High 5 concludes the month of April. It was definitely a full month that pushed our students both mentally, socially, and physically.

That’s how people grow. And our students are doing great.

I’m pleased to share some of the highlights from the month in our EMASI Van Phuc Monthly High Five which you can find below.

And take a moment to admire the hard work of our students in celebration of Earth Month, lovingly laying the foundation for a gargen. A beautiful display of our value of love and compassion extended to our planet, don’t you agree? .

We’re now in Semester 2B, the final stretch before the end of the school year. Students are reminded that they shouldn’t slow down now, but like an Olympic runner should sprint to the finish line.

Cambridge Mock Starters, Movers and Flyers exams will be taking place for elementary students soon.

In the coming week, students in Secondary will sit for the Cambridge KET and PET mock exams and High school students will sit for IELTS mock exams.

These tests help teachers measure student progress and support them in their learning.

Also, we are approaching semester 2B which is a decisive time for your child’s academic results for the academic school year. Your partnership in helping to keep them focused and engaged in their learning is much appreciated.

Health and Safety Reminders

Health and safety remains a top priority of our school and community. Families are reminded to complete the weekly health declaration. Do not send children to school if they have Covid symptoms or live with an F0.

We all have a part to play in the safety of our community.

Families will also be hearing from our school about new steps moving forward with regards to parent cards, access to the campus, and end of day protocols.

Family Communication

I am always ready to hear from you. Really. I will always make time to meet with any individual family to hear whatever they want to share.

“Office Hours with the Managing Director” are available every Friday from 8-9:30 am.

This year, families regularly receive important updates on their children’s learning. This includes weekly updates sent on Seesaw for elementary and Edmodo for secondary. Families are encouraged to contact their child’s homeroom teacher if they desire support with these platforms.

This is the final update for the Year of the Bull. I want to personally thank and congratulate all our families for your resilience and partnership throughout this difficult year.

Together we have overcome big challenges and accomplished things previously thought to be impossible.

The year of the Tiger promises to be a bold and exciting one. We expect the return of all students to in-person learning after the Tet holiday and we will continue to adapt to the “new normal.”

EMASI Van Phuc December 2021 Overview

Merry Christmas.

This will be the final High Five for the year 2021.

We have certainly come a long way together this year and as we approach the conclusion of our first semester, I want to share with you a High Five video that captures some of our finest achievements so far.

It's all in the videos at the bottom of this post. You do NOT want to miss them.

Of particular note, I want to congratulate our grade 9 and 12 students, teachers and families for successfully completing two weeks of on-campus studies.

Looking into 2022, we can expect even more accomplishments and positive developments to celebrate as a community.

The Ministry of Education and Training will be reviewing the situation across Ho Chi Minh City and will decide shortly about a possible return to campus for additional grades in January. We will certainly keep you informed of any developments and our school will be prepared for any decision.

Dear EMASI Families,

First things first. Some big news to share: The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has called for the return of students in Grades 1, 9 and 12 to schools beginning from December 13.

This is a promising first step forward as the whole city adapts to the new normal.

Our school is now hard at work preparing to welcome back the first batch of students and we expect that more grades will be brought back in the coming weeks.

Families will be kept informed. Be sure to check your email regularly and to read messages from your child’s homeroom teacher.

As we look forward to these exciting developments, let’s take a moment to look back at a full and rewarding month of November in our monthly EMASI High Five video.

Vaccinations of Secondary Students are Underway

EMASI is working closely with the Thu Duc Department of Education and Training to coordinate the vaccination of eligible students. This is a significant step towards a safe return to campus.

Reading Updates from Ms. Rayna, Head of Library

In the month of October, EMASI elementary students spent a combined 850 hours using Raz Kids . During this time they read more than 6,258 books and listened to 6,313 more!

Week 4 of the Family Fitness Competition

At the start of October, in the spirt of this month’s School Mission theme Personal Excellence, we launched our friendly family fitness competition, inviting families to join together and follow weekly fitness challenges from our PE team.

But when we look at this year at EMASI Van Phuc, we can see that the glass is overflowing!

Online School Year Closing Ceremony

On Friday, we held our virtual End-of-year ceremony for the student community at EMASI Van Phuc. This was screened during homeroom and was a way for everyone to reflect and celebrate the completion of the 2020-2021 School Year.

3) Online Graduation for Grades 5 and 9

The end of the school year is particularly significant for our grades 5 and 9 students who say goodbye to one stage of their education and prepare to enter new and exciting levels next year.

We can’t currently celebrate this milestone in person, but we will organize something special for all our graduating students when we return to campus in the upcoming school year. In the meantime, families are invited to watch a special video to mark the graduation at the bottom of this post.

4) Advanced Placement Program in Vietnam

As you know, starting in August we will launch the Advanced Placement program at EMASI Schools with courses in Chemistry and Calculus delivered by two excellent new members of the EMASI team, Mr. Phat and Mr. Thanh.

Over the past few weeks, I’m pleased to share that more than 20 students from across both campuses have stepped forward to apply.

The application process has required students to seek their English teacher's recommendation, sit for an application exam, and be interviewed by both Managing Directors. Announcements of the final selection will be made early this week.

I am particularly thrilled to share with you the fact that our school achieved 22 medals in our first ever participation in the prestigious Academic Olympiad at City Level. This was truly a school-wide effort constituting applaudable effort by our brave students, guided with considerable dedication by our outstanding educators and led with passion by our excellent Head of School, Ms. Cuc.

We are proud of our students who won medals, and we are equally proud of all our students who participated in the competition.

Online Bilingual Education in Vietnam in early 2021

The EMASI Bilingual School mission is to provide an outstanding education delivered in Vietnamese and English that emphasizes Vietnamese values, academic and personal excellence and fosters global understanding, respect and independent learning.

An Online Teaching & Learning policy must exist to ensure that a mission-driven school can continue to fulfill its mission – whether in school or online, and that educators understand how to continue to protect the physical, emotional and psychological safety of their students. Professional development for teachers goes hand in hand with delivering high academic achievement and a pandemic must not be an excuse to provide substandard education.

As an avid-online learner and the Managing Director of a Bilingual School, I want to reassure you with complete certainty that Online learning works! According to the World Economic Forum, when structured and delivered correctly, online learning results in the average student retaining 25-60% more material compared to a traditional classroom. Moreover, online learning can require 40-60% less time compared to learning in traditional environments. Students can learn at their own pace, re-read and review content, or skip through concepts as needed (Li & Lalani, 2020).

Online teaching and learning is not a replication of classroom learning.

EMASI Schools are guided by international education best practice in our preparation and delivery of effective online teaching and learning including but not limited to:

•The provision of a supportive online learning community.

•Clear communication to students and families of expectations, approaches and time requirements

•A variety of large group, small group, and individual learning experiences.

Assessment of language learning can be adapted for online. It makes a shift away from multiple choice questions to more personal communication and this only benefits students more. Such an approach results in academic development of students and also drives teachers to expand their capacity for teaching.

Authorities from leading education institutions around the world agree that on the subject of online learning, the best method to deliver meaningful teaching and learning is to provide a balance of synchronous (at the same time) lessons and learning activities with the teacher, as well as asynchronous (not at the same time) lessons and learning activities, as designed by the teacher (Cummings, 2020).

Online learning entails a wide variety of activities. This is especially true when the objective is language acquisition and when a school strives to create a bilingual setting for its students.

Bland, teacher focused lessons online are not a recipe for student success online or in person. But the online environment is particularly impacted by this. Effective online learning in a bilingual education program must be a child-centred education that combines bilingual instruction by teachers using Vietnamese language along with English teaching from teachers of a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Online Community Building and Social Interaction

Social interaction and relationships must remain a central aspect of online teaching and learning and therefore our online lessons and student activities will be designed with this in mind. At the same time, to support students’ growth and learning, teachers will ensure that students get timely and specific feedback.

Online education also lends itself to community building. Teachers should make the development of a community of students in the online forum a key objective, and at the same time, schools can be creative in seeking out online community partnerships and participating or leading in online community projects. Community stakeholders can be engaged as guest speakers by recording talks, giving online speeches, or even engaging students as online interns working remotely with community practitioners from various industries. Such community engagement with community partners can only benefit students.

As a Managing Direction, I am committed to the EMASI Schools mission and I believe that online learning is not something to apologize for: It is an opportunity to be embraced. Technology, when used strategically and thoughtfully is making a significant contribution to education and schools - whether bilingual, international, or local - can and must leverage this for the benefit of students for years to come.

Curious to see some of the highlights from the month of October at EMASI Van Phuc?

It is never too early to start planning for university.

Fulbright University Vietnam has extended a special invitation to both students and parents of EMASI Schools to visit Fulbright this Sunday, 8 November 2020 and join their Open Day. Participants will have the opportunity to meet with the university’s students, talk to admissions officers, and participate in demo classes.

EMASI Schools want to help our students have both good educations and healthy lifestyles. For this reason, we have cooperated with Doctor MyMy, Head of Pediatrics at CarePlus International Clinic, to run a workshop for parents called "Healthy minds & Healthy bodies."

The session will focus on practical advice for helping your child’s development through:

Healthy sleeping habits
Nutrition
Physical activity

When: 9:00 - 10:00 on November 14, 2020 at EMASI Van Phuc

As was shared during Orientation Day, the EMASI uniform beginning in January 2021 will include a school uniform jacket.

This jacket is the ONLY acceptable outer attire students will be allowed to wear in the building. The uniform jacket is designed for both indoor and outdoor weather. *Orders must be placed by Sunday, November 15, 2020.

4 September 2020

Even though this was a shortened week due to the National Holiday on Wednesday, it was a very full week at EMASI Van Phuc. Monday we commenced our extra-curricular activities for all students. We also, began preparation for our upcoming Opening Ceremony which will take place at the start of this coming week.

Extra curricular activities have begun this week with the aim of developing personal excellence in addition to the academic excellence taught in classroom learning. Parents are asked to remind and support students to bring their appropriate clothes for the different activities.

Students develop their football skills under the guidance of Mr. James .

Rock climbing is currently offered daily and is a great way for students to develop confidence and courage in a safe and controlled environment.

Elementary Students

In Nature and Society, grade 1 students now have been able to talk about their house through a picture that their parents took and sent to the teacher. They discussed in groups, roleplayed as journalists to find out about their classmates’ interests. Grade 2 students explored about the human body through a video called “Muscles for Kids – A fun intro to the muscular system for kids”. Grade 3 students utilized their lesson of Reading clocks to make their own schedule for a day at school. At the same time, they made a poster to tell stories, making use of their ability to draw clocks chronologically for the activities within a day. Students in grades 4 and 5 developed a habit of reading and taking notes of their thoughts into their reading diary.

Our younger elementary students continue to learn and follow classroom and school routines extremely well. Grade 1 students continue to practice writing in English and teachers report seeing a massive improvement. Students have also participated in a range of activities in other subjects, such as playing drums in music class, playing bench ball in PE class, and learning how to navigate and type their name using a keyboard in ICT class.

Meanwhile, older elementary students have broadened their horizons by studying other countries and they are beginning to recognize and celebrate their differences and similarities. The students also used their Mathematics, art, and English skills to design posters representing Vietnam's biggest cities in their Mathematics class.

Middle School

This week, our secondary students have remembered to bring their student cards to school and to be punctual to classes. Also, when participating the ECAs, they have been briefed about certain regulations of each activity. We really hope that all students will have their best preparation for the next week to have even more exciting experience during the ECAs

Middle School students are now using their own devices to research topics in English while seventh grade students writing biographies in English class, and research extreme environments in science class. The students are focusing on using Excel in ICT, and also playing basketball in PE class. In music class, the students are studying the use of music in all media including television, and are preparing to soon learn how to record audio.

Grades 9 to 11 EAL students have completed their first week with the Perspectives books, becoming familiar with the style of content and how they will balance their weekly workload between theoretical and practical tasks. They created accounts in their online study apps, and finalized the early stages of building a class web site. Each “department” in the class is responsible for different aspects of our first major project that involves research, critical thinking, speaking, writing and use of multimedia in a professional manner, and these departments are already working well together.

Physical Education Guidance

Question: Why do we want kids to learn swimming? Why is it important? And why do they need to wear googles?

Swimming is a LIFE SKILL that we teach at EMASI. Learning to swim is helpful to kids to gain water confidence and water safety. Swimming is important not only to reduce the risk of drowning for children, but it also provides health benefits such as keeping the heart and lungs healthy and improving the child's body strength and increasing the stamina.

Wearing goggles during swimming will help kids feel comfortable and increase their confidence as they learn to put their face in the water and will lessen the chance of getting sore eyes. Goggles also help students to open their eyes under the water allowing them to see around them.

EMASI Van Phuc August 2020 Overview

As you know, we are a school that is driven by our mission: To provide an outstanding education delivered in Vietnamese and English that emphasizes Vietnamese values, academic and personal excellence and fosters global understanding, respect and independent learning.

August has been the first month of a new school year, and this year, we have innovative plans for both you and your children. As you will see, this month’s newsletter incorporates some video clips, and we promise that soon, our monthly newsletter will be in video format, sharing dynamic visuals of the many happenings at our school, inside and outside of the classroom. EMASI Van Phuc Achievements to Report

We start our updates this month with excellent news from our previous school year. Our EMASI students have achieved an important milestone in their English language development.

Last year, several of our students worked hard and took the brave step to take an internationally recognized exam in a foreign language. These students are now able to receive a certification from an independent and reputable organization in language learning and assessment, Cambridge Assessment English, as proof of their language proficiency.

In the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), developed by the Council of Europe, language ability comprises five skills: reading, writing and listening, as well as spoken production and interaction. The Cambridge exams not only assess all five of these skills, but the achievements are also a demonstration of these students’ excellent academic effort as these certificates as recognized throughout the world.

Elementary Learning Updates

On the Elementary International Program, students have continued to settle into their class routines. They have followed the rules well and are now comfortable with their new teachers and classmates. The students have participated in a variety of interesting activities, such as giving presentations, making charts, creating posters, and using computers to complete quizzes. The students have also taken home their English notebooks for the first time. The teachers ask the parents to return the notebook every Monday.

From our MOET program, the first two weeks of school have allowed grade 1 students to successfully adjust to the EMASI learning environment. Teachers have observed great progress in personal development.

Meanwhile, Grade 2 students had a very interesting Nature & Society class exploring skeletons and Grade 3 students have developed their computer and collaboration skills with Microsoft Teams. Grade 4 are now working on a “Happy lunch” project for their Science class, while Grade 5 students went on a field trip by the banks of the Saigon river for their descriptive essays.

Finally, as part of our commitment to health and safety, elementary students practiced evacuation drills, with all children moving orderly, quickly and safely to the rendezvous points.

Physical fitness and the development of personal excellence is an important part of our program. Here is a clip of some of our students practicing basketball in our Physical Education class.

Middle and High School

In the 2nd week of the school year, middle and high school students have successfully picked up the pace. They had a chance to meet with the Leadership Team and myself to talk about the vision for the future. House activities will commence on Friday; we really hope that you will have amazing ideas, fully reflecting your strengths and build a united community.

For Middle and High School on the International Program, we invite you to look at this video prepared by Mr. Steve, showing video footage of an interactive project students are working on that brings together collaboration, technology and creativity – all vital skills for Industry 4.0 and beyond.

The project of the Value – Life skills committee is finalizing and ready for its commence in September. With the help of both MOET and IP teacher, the project is receiving more and more creative ideas, giving more opportunities to students to explore about themselves, helping them form their unique characteristics. With different topics for different grades, months we hope this is going to be such a precious journey on the path to maturity of the students.

From the first bell on Monday morning to final bell on Friday afternoon, EMASI students enjoyed a very positive and productive first week of a new school year, starting the journey to achieve an outstanding education.

For our kindergarten students especially, this has been a week to remember. Often the first few days transitioning into school life can be difficult for children, but we are pleased to report that ‘All is well” and that all our children had a wonderful week, with activities and lessons focused on classroom routines, settling in, and knowing the different parts of school and people in it. The joy in their faces when they achieved certain tasks is evidence that learning is taking place.

Elementary teachers have spent time this week getting to know each student and to better understand their unique learning needs and styles. From there, we will be able to better help students develop their strengths, their behavior and attitudes, etc. We have also established and informed students of our positive classroom rules and routines (Listen, Raise Your Hand, Be Kind, Be Safe). And students have played a big part in helping to create the school environment they want: Grade 3-5 students created posters and verbal presentations to share with the Grade 1-2 students and to introduce them to the EMASI code of conduct.

Students enjoyed a House meeting with the topic of “Living healthily and happily” in order to develop their sports abilities for personal excellence.

For middle and high school students, homeroom teachers reminded students of the behavior management procedures, evacuation process and learning objectives for the upcoming year and students participated in an engaging seminar about “Scientific Research”. Homeroom teachers have also spent this week organizing and running icebreaker activities to help students develop new friendships and generate camaraderie and motivation for the exciting learning journey ahead.

At the same time, high school students have been learning about teamwork, leadership and a number of project management skills by creating four “departments” – Academic, Multimedia, Creative and Support. Each has a volunteer leader who will take ultimate responsibility for ensuring their team is active and effective. Their independence, enthusiasm and engagement has been truly inspiring to all of us.

Learning Swimming Pool rules and water safety is an important part of our swimming program and we insist that before getting into the water, every student learns the rules of the pool and be guided in health and safety by our swimming team. After an initial lesson outside the pool at the start of the week, our students were given the all-clear to get into the water to begin learning this invaluable life skill.

Like you, we want your children’s school years to be memorable, meaningful and to set them onto the right path for a wonderful life.

On the Elementary MOET Program, children have been instructed to do all the steps in properly washing their hands, to wash their mouth with saltwater, to wear masks, to do social distancing and protect themselves from COVID-19.

We have taken special care to ensure that there is social distancing during lunch in our cafeteria so that your children can eat nutritiously, socialize with their peers, and develop the habits to protect their health.

We look forward to a strengthening relationship with all parents as we continue to walk together on the journey of your children’s education. Please continue your important role supporting your children’s learning at home as well as in school. Together we look forward to a new school year full of excitement at EMASI Van Phuc. Within classrooms students are able to remove their masks. EMASI lunch hours have been modified to allow for social distancing.

Even outside of school, families should frequently wash their hands and wear masks in public spaces and remain vigilant of their health.

Arrival

· Only parents accompanying KG students and year 1 are admitted through the Gate for dropping off children.

· The Gate opens at 7:30. There is no admission to school prior to 7:30.

· Only students who have registered for the Breakfast Programme are permitted to enter the school grounds at 7am and they must proceed directly to the cafeteria.

Pick up

· Classes end at 4:15.

· KG students are picked up at the Kindergarten Gate.

· Primary Students are collected by parents from the cafeteria after school hours

· Secondary students are collected by parents in the main corridor and courtyard.

· Parents must wear a mask and be temperature checked at the gate before entering the school.

· Only authorized people are allowed to collect children, and a school issued ID card is required. The ID card should be displayed by all parents when on school premises. Parents who do not bring ID card, will need a Visitor card from Admissions Office.

· Parents are expected to pick up their children in a timely and orderly manner

First Week of School at EMASI Van Phuc

Warm greetings to all parents and students to the start of a new school year!

These past few weeks have been a busy but exciting time for our team at EMASI Van Phuc as we prepare to welcome your sons and daughters to our campus. Everyone working at EMASI has an important role in ensuring a safe and productive environment for our children’s education.

This weekly update will be sent every week in order to keep you informed of some of the important news happening on and around our campus.

ALL EMASI parents are reminded to check their ISAMs account regularly and to link this account to their most frequently checked email address. ISAMS is our official student information system and is critical to managing all personal and academic data.

On Saturday, August 29 from 8 am until noon, the EMASI Van Phuc IT Department will host a hands-on Parent Workshop on ISAMS. A link to register for this will be shared soon.

Mọi nhân viên tại EMASI đều có vai trò quan trọng nhằm đảm bảo một môi trường an toàn và hiệu quả cho việc giáo dục con em chúng ta.

Bản cập nhật hàng tuần này sẽ được gửi hàng tuần để thông báo về một số tin tức quan trọng đang diễn ra tại trường. TẤT CẢ quý phụ huynh của EMASI được nhắc nhở thường xuyên kiểm tra tài khoản ISAMs và liên kết tài khoản này với địa chỉ email được kiểm tra thường xuyên nhất. ISAMs là kênh thông tin chính thức của nhà trường và rất quan trọng đối với việc quản lý tất cả dữ liệu cá nhân và học tập. Vào thứ Bảy, ngày 29 tháng 8, từ 8 giờ sáng đến trưa, Phòng CNTT EMASI Vạn Phúc sẽ tổ chức Hội thảo thực hành dành cho Phụ huynh về ISAMS. Đường dẫn để đăng ký tham dự sẽ được gửi đến quý Phụ huynh trong khoảng thời gian sắp tới.

EMASI thực hiện nghiêm túc chỉ thị của Bộ và Sở Giáo dục và Đào tạo (Sở GD & ĐT) và Bộ Y tế: Tất cả nhân viên và học sinh phải đeo khẩu trang và được kiểm tra nhiệt độ khi đến trường. Trong lớp học, học sinh có thể tháo khẩu trang. Giờ ăn trưa của EMASI đã được sửa đổi để đảm bảo giãn cách xã hội. Ở nhà, các gia đình cần phải thường xuyên rửa tay và đeo khẩu trang ở những nơi công cộng.

Xin lưu ý rằng hiện đang thi công cải tạo vỉa hè xung quanh trường học do chính quyền địa phương Vạn Phúc thực hiện. Do đó chúng tôi xin lưu ý rằng tình trạng vỉa hè và giao thông xung quanh trường sẽ bị ảnh hưởng trong những tuần tới. Chúng tôi sẽ cập nhật cho quý phụ huynh về tiến trình của việc này.

Nhập học:

Như quý phụ huynh đã biết, học sinh sẽ nhập học vào thứ hai, ngày 17 tháng 8.

Đến trường:

Chỉ những phụ huynh đi cùng học sinh Mẫu giáo và Lớp 1 mới được đưa các bé vào trong khuôn viên trường.
Cổng mở lúc 7:30. Không được vào trước 7:30.
Chỉ những học sinh đã đăng ký Chương trình Bữa sáng mới được phép vào sân trường lúc 7 giờ sáng và phải đến thẳng nhà ăn.

Ra về:

Lớp học kết thúc lúc 4:15.
Học sinh Mẫu giáo được đón tại Cổng Mẫu giáo.
Học sinh Lớp 1 và Lớp 2 sẽ đợi trong Nhà ăn
Các lớp 3, 4, 5 sẽ đợi trong phòng Gym.
Phụ huynh cần trình thẻ EMASI để vào cổng. Phụ huynh phải đeo khẩu trang và được kiểm tra nhiệt độ.
Đi theo bảng chỉ dẫn đến khu vực đón con theo cấp lớp.
Sau khi đã đón (các) con, phụ huynh được yêu cầu rời khỏi khuôn viên trường.
Phụ huynh phải đón con em mình đúng giờ và trật tự.
